I'm a direct, bottom-line kind of person with little patience for abstract theories. This book discusses the theoretical underpinnings of gardening, but I found it very useful. My husband and I just built a house and our yard is a blank slate. I had no idea where to start. After reading this book, however, I have a better understanding of what kind of garden should be planted in my yard. This book would be helpful to anyone who loves plants but doesn't' t understand which plants to get or where to put them.

This is a book done by one of the top professionals in the industry. It gives you a good background on the principles involved in designing a garden/landscape. I highly recommend getting it. There are no color photos here, but thats not what this book is about and for what I am seeing you can get it for on Amazon (9 cents!!) I suggest you grab it. I wouldnt particularly recommend this for just the homeowner interested in "doing her yard", however, this is a starting point for those who really want to utilize the principles involved in creating a great garden space, it is a "reading" gardening book, not an "inspirational" gardening book, more "educational".

Of the hundred garden and gardening books I own, I always go back to this one (I have the 1995 ed.). It is fundamental and funny, a refreshing breath of (un)common sense when designing a garden, or trying to figure out what's lacking in your own garden, or understanding what it is that gives such satisfaction in other people's gardens. The few drawings convey exactly what the author is trying to say.

Unlike other garden teaching texts, I looked forward to reading this one as one might a good novel. Joe Eck's writing style is elegant and conveys information most enjoyably. I feel I learned a great deal more from this single book than I have from whole stacks of texts on the same subject.

Very simple stuff not good enough to keep reading

the book is a nice mix of general ideas and practical tips, full of common sense attitude.(I would have finished my comment there, but amazon had required three more words.)

Love this book. It's like talking with a gardening friend every month. It's an essential on my bookshelf and I read each month again, and again as they happen.

Eck was assigned reading for landscape design class, but such a great read I finished before semester began. Very funny and insightful, for anyone who loves their outdoor space.

Naples and the Amalfi Coast are two of my favorite places to visit and I will be visiting them again very soon. I love to be able to read on my iPad about the Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Of course they advised not to visit between June and August because of the hot weather. There is also information about clothes to bring as well as hand sanitizer. There is information on Naples and the history of this city, plus Pompeii. It is a very good guide book for Naples and I recommend it to the casual tourist.

I'm going next week... so EXCITED!!

I think this is one of the best informative travel guide I have purchased. The details of the length of travel from different location is good to know as are the etiquette tips for walking or driving around the area. Italy is one the location that my wife and I would like to travel to within the next few years since our youngest is going off to college and looking for a location for nice vacation just the two of us. I would definitely recommend this guide to anyone looking to travel to Italy.

This small book gives by far the best, clearest, and most easy to understand analysis of how classical architecture was adapted to and grew through the Renaissance, that I've ever seen. It ought to be taught in every architecture school.

Although the case for classical architecture is not as simplified as Mr. Summerson makes it seem in this book, it is a wonderful introduction to this world of art. His prose is lucid and fulfills the artistic need to see associations across various works while also going deeper into a few main issues. For the price, this book cannot be beat. Highly recommended.

Worth it.

Cheaply produced. Very muddy photographs that don't clearly show the details. There's a glossary included, but without any illustrations. Not useful.

I was hoping for more of a design guide than this turned out to be. This is more of a historical text book. If you want a design guide for classical principles, I would highly recommend "Get Your House Right".

I don't recall a "preview" being an option prior to selection/purchasing. Book is ancient history of classic orders of Architecture (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders). My bad. Thought that, as pictured on the front cover, the book was more diagrammatic/pictoral in nature relating to molding details, not classical/ancient pediments and friezes. Well written Ancient History of the Classic Orders though.

As a result, students left the course considering going to Architecture school for graduate degrees! It was a life saver - and I will never look at buildings the same way again.

I was introduced to this classic work in a course on Michelangelo by John Shearman at Harvard, and I'm writing this review because I'm convinced this book deserves wider distribution.It's essentially an illustrated compilation of a series of lectures Summerson gave at university in England. The topic: the 'language' of architecture through the ages. Ever look at white marble columns, or that triangular thing over a window, and think how beautiful and elegant the display of forms was? Believe it or not, those styles are not created anew each time architects design a building! Rather, they draw on our rich common heritage - the 'classical language of architecture', first defined by Vasari in the 15th century (though in use since prehistoric times). That thing over the window is called a 'pediment', and columns can be Doric (stocky), Ionic (tall and graceful), or Corinthian (elaborated with flowery scroll-work at the top.)
