Tap Out: Poems, by Edgar Kunz

Review

"[A] gritty, insightful debut." —Washington Post “A whirlwind debut.Stories of sclerotic lives told in wrought images, Kunz arrives with real poetic talent…[he] pulls us into his poems and keeps us there through crisp detail…(A hint: trust poets who show back to you the images you’ve seen in glimpses and tucked in the back of your mind.)…Tap Out lives in a bittersweet world, and does so well, but there’s also fine touches here: a mother who has had enough, a son who sees beauty in loss…”—Nick Ripatrazone, The Millions, “Must Read Poetry” "Kunz crafts a poetics of disappointment and consolation...[the] poems are sparse and accessible, reminiscent of Hemingway in both content and style, and feature an extraordinary new voice that draws its energy from an underrepresented perspective." —Publishers Weekly, starred review “These poems have a  pervasive physicality that is both rewarding and horrifying…Arresting imagery, unexpected detail, brilliant use of tensions, a flowing rhythm and overall accessibility make this a collection to be read and re-read. Tap Out superbly mines the beauty, brutality, tensions and contradictions of working-class U.S. communities.”–Shelf Awareness “This powerful collection reads like an elegy and a confession, like a slap to the face followed by a plaintive kiss, like watching bad things happen and knowing that you’re complicit. Yet cutting through every one of these essential poems is a gritty, naturalistic beauty that makes me want to read them again and again. Tap Out is a gem, and Edgar Kunz is a major talent.” — Andre Dubus III, author of Gone So Long and Townie "There is no ground of existence that does not require (or fail to sustain) its poet. This proposition, requiring continual re-proving, has found again its confirmation in Edgar Kunz’s first book. In the lineage of Levine, Jordan, and Laux, Tap Out presents the data of blows received and taken in fully. Yet these poems do not return blow for blow; they offer instead an unflinching, continued allegiance to abiding connection. Without summation or comment, they remind us that all alchemies of being are possible. Kunz’s precision-tool language of memory and witness enlarges, pivots, pieces together the broken into a world made new, survivable, holdable, forgiven.” — Jane Hirshfield, author of The Beauty and Come, Thief “Edgar Kunz’s startling debut, Tap Out, is one of the best books of poetry I’ve read in a long time. These poems interrogate what is received and what is bequeathed in our damaged systems of masculinity, and they do so in ways that are unexpectedly vulnerable. At the same time, the poems are onomatopoeia of humility and busted machismo. It’s as if the poems themselves are surprised by how much harm has been done, how much energy and emotion have been expended simply surviving inside of our toxic patriarchy. Fathers are complicit. Friends and brothers are complicit. The speaker is complicit, too, and yet the poems do their vital work without soapboxing. They search constantly for better ways of being human. These are essential poems.” — Adrian Matejka, author of The Big Smoke and Map to the Stars “The sustained lyricism of these poems is all the more powerful for being burned at the edges by memory, by grief, by regret. In terms of craft, this poetry creates a world where human action reaches language the way gravity bends starlight: in a drama of weight and light. This is a hard-pressed place, a territory of failed relationships and regions that never becomes landscape. As its reporter, Edgar Kunz lives up to its challenges and understands its limits. This is a wonderful first book, memorable and unsettling.” — Eavan Boland, author of A Woman Without a Country “Tap Out is an ardent and gorgeous refusal to scorn the aches and wounds that bring us closer to mercy. Rippling with both sorrow and wonder, Edgar Kunz’s narratives sift through the intricacies of masculinity, working-class lives, and abandonment. The telling isn’t singed with nostalgia that obscures pain: his muscular lines make visible the scars that tether the self to hurt, to hope. The language is deftly scored on the page—the diction itself is revelatory. ShopRite. Larch. Chamber-throat. This book reminds us the heart has its own intelligence.” — Eduardo C. Corral, author of Slow Lightning “Edgar Kunz extends the legacy of James Wright and Philip Levine in these gutsy, tough-minded, working-class poems of memory and initiation. Tap Out is a marvelous debut, a well-made and harrowing book.” — Edward Hirsch, author of Gabriel and A Poet’s Glossary

First book of poetry I've ever owned; my next book of poetry will be whatever Kunz writes next. Beautiful and sorrowful poems. Highly recommended

These poems linger long after you put the book down.

Poetry as abrupt and jarring as broken bone. Unless you can appreciate lives lived at the hard, ugly edges and find the brutal beauty in humanity that shows up drunk and loud, spitting and stealing, then stay away. But here’s the thing. This is humanity that won’t tap out, no matter what.Full Disclosure: A review copy of this book was provided to me by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt / Mariner Books via NetGalley. I would like to thank the publisher and the author for providing me this opportunity. All opinions expressed herein are my own.

I don’t even read poetry, but this was so interesting and makes me open my mind to a new genre.

My man can really string together some words. Very visceral, very haunting. Check it out.

These poems put me inside another person's experiences, rather than just describing them.

So raw and gritty

As a longtime fan of Mr. Wolfe, I have purchased several of his technique books, but haven't purchased any of his work directly. When I read about this book in Outdoor Photographer, I pre-ordered it immediately and received it a few days ago. I spent a couple of hours going through it this weekend and I am amazed at the quantity and quality of the photographs and the book itself. The construction is excellent with heavy binding and paper, and the printing is superb. The colors are vibrant and natural and the registration is perfect resulting in sharp photos that jump off the page. The foldout pages add to the design of the book and allow for some great layouts like the native masks and painted faces, which was one of my favorite sections. You have to be a bit careful opening and closing the foldouts as they are precisely cut & folded. The photographs themselves speak to Wolfe's mastery of photography. The diversity of styles, compositions, and subject matter is impressive, and I love his use of color and perspective to tell the story in each frame. I hadn't seen a large number of the photos but was happy to see that most of my favorites were included as well. Having put together a couple of self-published photo books, I have an understanding of the amount of work that goes into creating one, and I can't imagine how much effort went into this book. The photos are organized into cohesive chapters and there are nice introductions to each. At the end of the book, he provides the technical details of each photo along with a brief caption, adding yet more value to the book.Putting all of this aside, the best part of the book are the photographs. Whether you enjoy landscapes, wildlife, travel, other cultures, or nature in general, you'll find a lot to love with this book. Each photo stands on its own and fits well into the story he tells in each section. I'm sure this book will be my source of inspiration and awe for many years to come.

This book is a gem for photography. The binding and the large size layout are excellent and the print paper is of good quality. Each picture is well printed with great resolution as it should be. For each chapter, the author wrote about the history of how he came about to taking these trips and how his interest developed over the years. So it is also a mini-story book of Art's photographic journey. What I like the most is the Photo notes at the end of the book. These notes described not only the parameters used for taking the pictures, but also sometimes the little stories to put the pictures in the right context. People not interested in these parameters/stories can easily skip, but for people trying to learn photography these information are very useful. I wish he could describe a bit more about how he decided to use those parameters. Because of 400 pages of heavy paper, it is heavy and this book is not something you read on your bed.

This book is really a tour de force. After buying it as a gift for my mother, I was so impressed with it that I bought it as a gift for someone else. I find it remarkable that one photographer could have such an artistic eye in photographing still nature scenes, wildlife and human beings. I can't imagine many people, old or young, who would not find a great deal to enjoy in this wonderful book. While not inexpensive, it is of very high quality (it weighs a ton), and is endlessly fascinating to page through. Very highly recommended!

This a a gorgeous book, both in terms of images and printing and finishing. Several of the images are classics that have become iconic for anyone interested in photography, especially nature and landscape, as well as people. The printing is also excellent, and it makes a difference seeing them in large format on paper.Be warned, though - it is heavy (and worth every pound!).

After purchasing multiple high-end nature photo albums, this one is by far my favorite. After reading many magazine articles about the author, I found this advertised in a photo magazine and ordered it immediately. This is the jewel in my collection and inspires me to attempt to reproduce similar imagery.

What an incredible book of beautiful images, a lifetime of dedicated work, printed in exceptional quality. This is a large, heavy book that is worth twice the price. This is an excellent book to give as a gift.

I expected the book to be much smaller but it was HUGE and lovely! One of those gargantuan coffee table books you could use as a weapon. A great addition to any home that loves wildlife and landscape photography.

Not a cheap book, but it is very large (better have a sturdy coffee table) and very well printed. Art Wolfe is a master of landscape, travel and wildlife photography and this retrospective of his work shows it. All the images aren't 5-star, as some were done a long time ago when gear and materials were not as good as now, but all show his compositional skills and timing. It's a great compliment to his PBS series that is still in reruns on many PBS stations. Some of the photographs are without peer.

This was a purchase for a report my 6th grader was doing. She found the pictures to be of help for her to visualize the journey that she had been reading and reachearing.... good value

Very happy with the quality of this purchase and the supplier.

I bought this book with the remainder on a gift card so I dont feel slighted when I realized it was geared more toward a child or preteen. It has good pictures and easy to understand writing but not for a grown up or more serious reader. I will give it away to someone whom will appreciate it more than me.

Hillary's life shows that there is more to say than "Because it's there."In this age of celebrities, it is important to remember the true heroes. Ed Hillary's life should be celebrated for his remarkable development assistance projects in Nepal, for his advocacy of adventure (particularly outdoor adventure, whether mountaineering or surmounting the challenges in grassroots development work on behalf of friends and comrades in adventure), but also for his many volumes of self-aware, thoughtful, and entertaining adventure narrative. Brot's book is intended for youngish readers, but it is a serious, thorough, and useful study of a life worth emulating. Thanks!!

My husband just trekked to base camp at Everest. This book helped all of us learn and appreciate a lot about the area and its history.
