Just what does an oriental girl doing a ballet jete have to do with a story about a NC Irish step dancer? Nothing. Please, this is a great book; it deserves a better cover. I am a sucker for coming of age books about hard life lessons moving a child into adulthood--this book has a twist in which the kid has the maturity and insight, but her parents need the hard life lessons to grow up. Most authors go from one extreme to another in portraying families--either parents are the Waltons and Cleavers or else drunken abusive monsters. This is one of the rare in-between books about a really human family of flawed, foolish, but well-intentioned losers, trying hard to force their kids into their own misconceived loser mold while being too proud and set in their loser ways to allow their children to be independent individuals, that is, until life smacks them upside the head--hard--more than once. This is not fluff fiction but heart and soul realism, tragic at times but filled with enough human spirit and resilience to not be dismal.Hickman is one of my favorite authors, I have got to read the rest of her novels just to see if she has ever written any book that is less than wonderful.

What is not to like about Patricia's Hickman's latest story? This is a tale of two sisters in the early 1960's, in a small southern town, ripe with scandals, family secrets, sexual tensions, and racists, and tragedy. But in all this mess, you will find love and courage and hope. This story gripped me from the first page and I couldn't get away from it as I went through the twists and turns and surprises right along with Flannery Curry. I really had no idea how things would turn out and found I kept holding my breath. Next time I read it, I can breathe.

But, I wasn't sure it was a Christian fiction book or not. Which was okay, I was just under the impression that it was. Christian. I'm used to most Christian fiction having scripture throughout and leaving me thinking more about God and the Bible. This book did not. At the end, there was mention of God. However, the storyline is great and kept my attention to the end. It had very interesting parts, especially the neighbors behind her and the dancing/ Story Chair. I'd love to know where that idea came from. I haven't read anything based on this time period of when Blacks were segregated from Whites in everything in America. So, that was interesting to me because it was a new time period for me. Good book, just don't expect it to tie scripture throughout.

Set in Moore County NC in the sixties, the author draws on the real tension between the races to create a story about healing relationships. The main character, Flannery, is a teenager who has to work through difficult relationships with her family, her neighborhood, and her friends. The wisdom and love of a neighboring family who, as the only black family in a white neighborhood, have to endure persecution, give Flannery the courage to face her own demons.Hickman allows us to feel Flannery's pain and watch her grow into a wise young woman. It doesn't descend into the melodramatic or paint a syrupy sweet picture of teenage life; Flannery is a very real character, dealing with real issues, such as death, divorce, step-parents, financial worries, discrimination, and the uncontrollable circumstances of life.I really enjoyed it, and have to confess I put off doing other things in order to finish it, which is the test of how good a book is. The characters are engaging, the story is fast-moving, and the resolution is satisfying. What more could you ask for in a novel? Another winner from Patricia Hickman!

Loved this book and will be downloading more from Patricia Hickman. It was well written and the story was nicely developed. I was hooked from the beginning.Just when I thought I had the plot figured out, she threw in twists and turns. I laughed and cried. Great story!I grabbed this book when it was free at the recommendation of another great author. However, had I paid for it, I would be just as happy! A few minor editorial issues, but not many!To defend the cover, she dyes her hair in the story. However, a head of beautiful, red curls would have been much more eye catching. Maybe the red clashed with the yellow? ;)

The back and forth of the story was a bit confusing for me at first and then I realized what was happening. I kept reading because I wanted to know more. The intertwining stories of Flannery and her neighbors and her best friend and her dance teacher and her parents and her mother was amazing and I admire anyone who can write like that. It is about a sad time in the history of our country. About dysfunctional families and a child's dreams and fears. I actually cried near the end. This was not a preachy Christian novel. But it was definitely spiritual and I enjoyed the relationship between Theo and Flannery.

WhileI am not sure how possible all that was tied together in this book might be in 'real life' it showed how the black and white communities CAN and do get along. Bias/racialism is ramped not only in the south but in the north also, so to see how the innocence of a child and the love for humanity of an adult can overcome such obsticles is refreshing to say the least. I am sure many will think it is an impossible plot, but I do believe that to a great degree, it has happened and will happen again.

This book is written from the perspective of Flannery Curry, a teenager in the 60s whose claim to fame was her Irish dancing... that is until a tragic accident turned her world upside-down. This book has all the right elements - mystery, intrigue, drama... and with it taking place in the 60s, there are some racial tension issues as well. Flannery grows through all of these things and becomes a strong young woman through it all, but the trials in the midst are severe.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.I couldn't wait to start reading the third and last book in this series! At the end of book 2 we got a hint of what Chloe was up to and I was to excited to finally get her story. Foul Play is a perfect ending to this series. It's filled with an amazing romance, two great characters, a bit of mystery and suspense and three epilogues!Foul Play is Chloe's story and it wraps up the mystery. This book was a bit more focused on the mystery and suspense than the previous books. Chloe is convinced that Vincent's brother is wrongly convicted of murder and she wants to find out what happened. It all comes together in this book and there are some ties back to the previous books and some hints we got there that tie into the mystery. I thought the mystery was well done, I was surprised by part of it and not so much by another part of it. I liked how it all got wrapped up with a satisfying conclusion.Chloe is the youngest sister of the three, she is really sweet and has a huge heart. She believes the best of people, wants to help people and fights for justice. She brings light and laughter wherever she goes and it just seems perfect she would fall for the school's troublemaker Vincent Mancini. Chloe and Vincent are so different, but they are so perfect for each other. This book starts right in the middle of things. After an evening of volunteering Chloe gets attacked and Vincent shows up to help her. She gets a glimpse of the real Vincent and what follows is an awesome romance. They slowly get to know each other and fall hard for each other. They are just so adorable together and they made such a great couple.Vincent comes from a family who is involved with all sorts of crime. My heart broke for him and his bad home situation and that he had to deal with that. Everyone thinks the worst of him, so he just plays along with that. It was awesome to see when Chloe got a glimpse of the real Vincent and fall for that person and we slowly see that all the glares and angry behavior is mostly a front. He does have a bit of a temper, but I felt like that fit his character.I loved these two together. Where Vincent seems dark, Chloe is all light and they work so well together. I especially liked how Chloe slowly changed Vincent's outlook on life, got him to see that not everyone is bad and bring light to his dark life. And the ending was perfect. I also appreciated how the book was low on drama and there is this scene that felt so realistic where Vincent tries to do what he thinks is the right thing. The relationship struggles that they had felt realistic and I liked how for the most part their relationship isn't easy, but they do stand together and there's no miscommunication going on.It was awesome how this book wrapped things up and then we skip a year forward and get an epilogue from all three sisters. I loved it! It was so awesome to see how they are doing a year later, what they're doing and how their romance is going now. I think it was brilliant how the author gave each of them their own epilogue. To summarize: This book was an awesome ending to this series. Foul Play tells Chloe's story and it brings the conclusion to the mystery. The mystery got wrapped up nicely, with some surprises along the way and I liked how there are some hints in earlier books already. Everything falls on it's place here. This book might be my favorite romance so far! I loved Chloe and Vincent together, she's all brightness and positivity, while he has a more negative opinion of the world and has a bad home situation. I liked how great these two are together and I loved their romance. There was little drama, no miscommunication and the struggles they faces felt realistic. The book wraps things up nicely and there is an epilogue from all three of the sisters, which was great! I you're looking for a great Young Adult Romance series with great romances, a bit of mystery/ suspense and little drama, then I can't recommend this series enough!

I was a little sad to have read through these three books so fast. By the end of Foul Play I felt invested in these characters and just couldn't believe that I was already done!Maddie, Max, and Chloe have had their lives uprooted during the middle of their senior and junior years. Going from being the star players on their all-girl baseball team in Columbus, they are now having to prove they are good enough to be placed on the Armitage high school team.Chloe is the youngest Barlow sister, and the one that everyone thinks needs to be watched and protected. Chloe has a tender heart and believes that not everyone is who rumors make them out to believe, she's chooses to see everyone as good until they prove her differently. This includes the school bad boy Vincent Mancini. When he rescues her from what could've been the worst night of her life, she knows there is a different side to him than the bad his family name has brought him. What starts out as leaving notes soon turns into a budding romance. However, Vincent is still a Mancini and his uncle won't let him forget it. Now Vincent not only has to protect Chloe from his family members, there is a new threat out there trying to keep the towns secrets just that...secret. With Chloe digging trying to prove Vincent's brothers innocence, powerful people are willing to do whatever necessary to keep them from digging too much into the case. While Chloe and Vincent's story may not have been my favorite, Chloe is the kind of character I love! She doesn't judge and believes in letting people make their own name for themselves.

Foul Play is the 3rd and final book in the Barlow Sisters series! Chloe Barlow has always followed the path her older twin sisters walked until they moved to Armitage. It takes one night after volunteering at a homeless shelter for Chloe to nearly get attacked until the famed bad boy of the school, Vincent Marcini comes to save the day. With Vincent being the total bad boy and nobody wanting to have anything to do with him due to his last name, Chloe sees a different side to Vincent that he doesn't share with anyone. As Vincent dealing with a broken home and with a brother in jail over being framed, Chloe and Vincent take it upon themselves to solve the mystery. Everything will lead to a shocking conclusion to to what really happened to Vincent's brother and a bittersweet ending for the Barlow sisters!I know I say this after every book that I read by Jordan Ford but this series has to be my favorite by her so far! I loved the fact that each one of the books had each sisters point of view when things were happening throughout the series, it just made the story come to life even more than ever! I always felt Chloe's story was gonna to be explosive for who she has chosen to love but that ending brings everything full circle with the events that had happened in Curveball to Foul Play! I also loved the true ending with what their futures are like just a year after everything had happened, it truly was the icing on the cake!Thank You to Jordan Ford for writing yet another ending to a fantastic series!!I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the Author!

PRO -- If you don't want to read Graham's books, then this is a high-level short-cut to the nuts and bolts of Buffett's investment analysis model. More specifically how it evolved overtime. While Mary did state that she was going to repeat a lot of material to help those who need it to learn key points -- knowing that this is her style of writing will help you skim through the book a little bit faster.CON -- The some spelling errors, sentence structure and page numbering in the Table of Contents is definitely off -- other than that I would classify these items as a "slight irritation" -- forgiveness is good. If you are a detail-oriented I would say -- "just let it go" -- otherwise it might derail you from the message, as it tried to do with me.OVERALL -- I learned some new key insights and these have certainly helped me to look at investing in a different light, such as the priority order of key management principles that can tell you if management is shareholder focused or not. Thinking through the concept that management capability takes a backseat to having a solid economic foundation, was an obvious, but certainly overlooked concept it seems by market players. Following a solid foundation, are retained earnings, repurchasing shares and then dividends, all of which are based on Return on Equity and to what degree they increase shareholder value. One unexpected insight from the financial analysis mechanics for me is that it made me think about my mindset regarding even simple day-to-day expenditures and investments of time. Applying the RoE model to this as well, revealed that there are certainly areas where I could get a better return -- or the awareness that I may not even know my current RoE.KNOWLEDGE CANNOT BE UNLEARNEDThe odd thing about knowledge is that once you know it, it's difficult to un-learn it. You may choose not to use it, but its difficult to not have it popup in your head during your thinking. Therefore one is forever shaped by the continual presence of new knowledge. This can impact one's decisions or at the very least it can alter one's processing. While this book may not be life-altering for you, it may set you on a different life path trajectory (if only by one degree) -- which in turn may change where you ultimately land.Enjoy!

Overall I would say this was an absolutely fantastic book. Do keep in mind one shortcoming with regards to the 10 year projections. The author assumes that all the retained earnings will increase the equity base on a dollar for dollar basis. However you have to keep in mind that some of those retained earnings will go towards investing in plant, property and equipment which merely replace old equipment with new equipment and do not increase the equity base. This net operating income minus capital expenditures for plant, property and equipment (found on the cash flow statement) are your owners earnings or free cash flow and, in my opinion, are a more realistic gauge to project equity per share figures.

I purchased this book originally about 6 years ago. Thought I knew it all; so I skimmed the book looking for something I didn't know.I reread the book in January 2013 and was very embarresed to discover all the valuable material I had completely missed. This book is a fun read, definitely not a textbook. If you are interested in "buy and hold" investing, don't want to read another teztbook, and would like to improve your investment "batting average", then buy this book. Also follow directions and purchase the recommended Texas Instruments BA 35 Solar calculator. I didn'y follow this direction and paid the price until I "learned".

Great product; fast shipping. Thank you.

Great book for the semi-technical finance buff. Lots of good insight into Warren Buffett's way of investing but a little out dated, because it was written a few years ago. Loved the math lesson on finance calculator, I even bought the calculator used in the examples.

Great book.

As the title suggests, this book is dated. The author also attempts to condense Warren Buffett's investing methods into a simple formula. (Her main credential: she was married to his son for a while back in the 80s and 90s).But Warren Buffett and his investing strategies are not as simple as the author seems to imply. And markets change fast. For instance there are also some bullet proof "Buffett companies" listed that you should have bought at the top:Fannie Mae (collapsed) Freddie Mac (collapsed) MBIA (a toxic asset dump that has also collapsed)--the author also recommends Circuit City and print media as great investments... But you get the point. This book was lightweight when it was published 11 years ago and though it holds some overall interest can hardly be recommended in 2009.

Who would know better the methods of a Financial Genius than an ex daughter in Law who studied under him. You do not keep deep secrets from the family. This book tells it all. How to find the companies and what to say and do. All-of-a-Kind Family, by Sydney Taylor

Amazon.com Review

There's something to be said for a book that makes you wish you'd been part of a poor immigrant family living in New York's upper east side on the eve of World War I. Sydney Taylor's time-honored classic does just that. Life is rich for the five mischievous girls in the family. They find adventure in visiting the library, going to market with Mama, even dusting the front room. Young readers who have never shared a bedroom with four siblings, with no television in sight, will vicariously experience the simple, old-fashioned pleasures of talk, make-believe, and pilfered penny candy. The family's Jewish faith strengthens their ties to each other, while providing still more excitement and opportunity for mischief. Readers unfamiliar with Judaism will learn with the girls during each beautifully depicted holiday. This lively family, subject of four more "all-of-a- kind" books, is full of unique characters, all deftly illustrated by Helen John. Taylor based the stories on her own childhood family, and the true-life quality of her writing gives this classic its page-turning appeal. (Ages 9 to 12)

I read All-of-a-Kind-Family when I was eight, and that was more than six decades ago. Let that sink in for a moment. I loved it, even though as a little Methodist Southern girl I knew absolutely nothing about Jewish families in very early 20th century New York City. But such was the charm of the author's voice, her skill in portraying simple things with style and care, and her characters that transcended time, place, and ethnicity that the initial unfamiliarity faded away, never to return.I re-read this book every ten years or so when a return to childhood favorites was a better antidote to the world's ills than Xanax, and all this time I didn't know there were sequels. A friend on Goodreads shone a light on my ignorance, and off I went.Despite the fact that I am now older than dirt, I immediately took to this first sequel as easily as making the reacquaintance of a dear old friend. The story was as fresh, as uncomplicated, and as rewarding as my experience with the original. All my critical faculties, inner editing tendencies, and permanently raised eyebrow disappeared as I read. Nothing had changed, nothing was lessened, or somehow lacking in any regard. The Family is intact, and each member even more developed, dimensional, and interesting. The five girls are growing up, and their baby brother is too, the special and longed-for son who is never obnoxious. Fortunately, there are no lightning bolts of deus ex machina good luck to change their circumstances, and the ability to find happiness in simple pleasures and quotidian tasks remains. Sometimes I wish that were true these days. You know what? There are other sequels to follow. This is inspiring and welcome during my Golden Years. I should try to find copies of the Betsy/Tacy books, and books written by Lois Lenski...

This was a favorite from my childhood and I wanted to collect them for my grandchildren to enjoy too. I reread this book and it still holds the delights I enjoyed as a child. Wonderful! I will gladly without reservations collect them all and look forward to reading them to the children in the days to come.

This is a great story about a family of 5 girls (and later, a little boy), and their adventures at home, in school, and in life. They are firmly but lovingly raised by their mom and dad, who teach them such things as patience, discipline, and personal responsibility.

It is impossible to adequately describe how important the "All of a Kind Family" books have been to my daughters, beginning when they were ages three and six and continuing now years later. I have read all the books to them several times, and they have listened to Suzanne Toren's incredible readings dozens of times. We all listened to the first book so often that they pretty much memorized it, and our whole family had countless hours of fun imitating the voices and accents Toren gives the different characters and making up new stories about the family. Even I felt like we had become part of the family! Not only did we thoroughly enjoy these books, but we also learned a tremendous amount about life on the Lower East Side in the 1910s and Jewish traditions. Each of the books has a plot line involving a different set characters outside the family, but it is the small, everyday moments that bring the stories to life. The family is always loving and supportive, and although the characters face some challenges, there is never any content too disturbing for younger children.Sydney Taylor should hold her place beside Laura Ingalls Wilder in the canon of historical fiction for children!

I loved this book as a kid and it is a classic in my opinion. It tells of an age gone by and of a family, who despite not having much in the way of money, has a lot of love. This book makes you wish for simpler times when family was more important than anything and they stuck together. Where simple things mean happiness.

Meet Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte, Gertie and their parents. This family has lots of adventures. Find out some of their Jewish traditions. Meet their friend named Charlie (he spoils the children.) What a shock the last surprise will be!My thoughts on this book are that they are very adventurous, and the whole family tries to make the best of everything.I would recommend this book to people who like books about HAPPY FAMILIES!Reviewed by: Lillian Brown age: 9

My 8 and 11 year old children LOVED this book read aloud to them during our homeschool mornings. We learned a lot about Jewish holidays and just really enjoyed laughing and crying with this family. They want more books with this family!

When I bought this book, I wondered if my daughter ( who was eight ) would find it too "old fashioned". As soon as I started reading it to her, she was enraptured! These are still great books for young girls. If you loved them in grade school, share them with children you love.

Great for young ankylosaurus fans who also appreciate books. For kids that mostly care about making dinosaur toys fight or jumping on the furniture, it's so-so.For parents looking to quickly answer endless dinosaur questions, there is room for improvement. The table of contents could be improved if there was a tiny picture of each dinosaur next to their names and the pronouncation under each name. By the time I flip through the pages (and struggle through the pronouncation), my 3.5 year old has already moved on. This would be slightly improved if the table of contents could work as a quick reference page. Also I feel many of the sections, including the physical features section, for each dinosaur is lacking. For example, on the Ankylosaurus page it says "body covered in armor except for stomach, bony club at end of tail," on the Euoplocephalus page it says "ring of armor around its neck, club at end of tail," in my opinion these descriptions are basically interchangeable. They also come from the same region. This presents a real problem if you've been struggling to explain the differences to your know-it-all-dinosaur-son.I really hoped this book would provide the answer to "what's the difference between a ankylosaurus and a euoplocephalus?" They lived 65 million years ago vs. 70 million years ago really doesnt help me when I'm trying to identify dinosaur toys.Another slightly failed attempt at being cool mom. I guess my son and I will continue to argue over armored dinosaur names and identification of ambiguous dinosaur toys. For comparison, the last picture is the table of contents of a Triceratops book by David West, (love the pictures and scale on contents page but no pronouncation guide anywhere in the book).Good luck dino parents.
