I thoroughly enjoyed this novel framed through the device of the unreliable narrator, Lulu. Initially appearing as a naiive and somewhat fatuous American CIA agent, Lulu's actions become progressively more chilling and duplicitous. Diane Johnson's well-written novel meditates on the cultural imperatives states and religions use to justify expedience. This is a sophisticated novel and Lulu's blunt observations about Islam are part of her character, and not as some readers believe, evidence of ignorance and political incorrectness. Whether Marrakech is correctly portrayed is irrelevant, as this is not a travelogue. It is an exotic and lushly described setting whose ambience gives a noirish film-like quality to the action.

Become an insider to the humor and private life of the writer's encounters and adventures home and abroad; a selection from over 100 letters written in six years.I read the book because it was on my reading & discussion club's monthly book list. It was not a favorite book. The author does help you experience inside the middle east society with its suppression of women. But Lulu is an "American tramp" in my view with no moral guard rails to her sexual willingness as a single woman. Lulu has our American societal values of continual erosion about virginity and marriage. There is a lack of spiritual piety in the author's attitude and reference to Christianity, the Bible, with the expected lack of comfort from quotes out of Islam's Koran. It makes me believe that while Diane Johnson likes to write, she is possibly allowing the reader see into the dark void within herself as Lulu. Some authors do that don't they? Perhaps she herself is spinning into a black hole in the universe. She or Lulu or both maybe have lost their compass and way in this present life.

I enjoyed this cross between a chick book and a spy thriller. Great feeling of the place, and expat life style. It could have used some editing, as there are some plot threads that are dropped.

Preparing for a trip to Morocco I selected this book. Kept my interest and some light humor.

"Lulu in Marrakech" provided the local color that I anticipated when I ordered it. Anyone that enjoys mystery and intrigue set in an exotic locale will find this book appealing. The details of place and time spice up a story that sometimes rambles but manages to entertain. The juxtaposition of Islam and the Western way of thinking provides insight into current world conflicts. Lulu's role as a CIA operative leads her into situations that have open-ended questions, and the violence that shatters her make-believe life among the expatriates in Morocco came as a shock. I admit to seeking out definitive endings in the books I read and was left longing for one at the end of this book. Still the book took me on an interesting journey.

The book came faster than promised and was in great condition for a used book. I love Diane Johnson and this tale did not disappoint .

I enjoy reading Diane Johnson because she manages to be both lively and literate. Her other books--Le Mariage and Le Divorce--had the same easy charm. Even when she is dealing with rather ghastly happenings, she writes from the viewpoint of a somewhat puzzled heroine who doesn't take herself too seriously.

I was really hopeful when I started looking in this cookbook, after all...500 recipes! There must be something useable in this. I unfortunately kept finding really boring recipes that I'd seen so many times everywhere else, only in this cookbook the instructions were edited sometimes merely badly and sometimes with steps that if followed would result in people getting sick. For example, one recipe instructs you to recook the dish for 10 more minutes if the chicken isn't pink enough. Cooked chicken should not be pink! Another recipe tells you to start the Saute function with the lid still on. It tells you to remove the lid in the next step, but you should never have the lid on (unless it's the glass lid with a vent) during the Saute function. After that it's just some bad editing that gets annoying, like how it continually is said to let your pot mix cook.In the introduction of the book, the author spends time describing the different instant pots & what the buttons basically do. It's not a thorough description, but if you had no idea before and wanted a basic knowledge about these things, it would suffice.Recipes did stay true to Paleo ingredients, so that was a giant plus, just wish they would have been more interesting.Overall, I really can't recommend this cookbook...there are just too many scary little things that if you didn't know better could get you in trouble, and the editing is just annoying to read.

Tried this new cookbook today. I made five different recipes. All were easy to make and delicious. Love the IP. Able to make meals for the whole week in one day. Recipes are easy to follow. I also have multiple food allergies. Great variety of recipes with clean and easy ingredients. Clearly written with easy to follow instructions. The recipes are classics that you will go back to time and time again. I've own my copy less than a week and have already used three recipes and have several on my menus for next week. Most all of the recipes also have an alternative cooking method if you don't have or don't want to use an IP.Would definitely recommend.

The best part is that it is a good combination of vegetarian and non vegetarian recipes along with soups and desserts. The book has great photos and easy to follow instructions. The use of instant pot will make your cooking more interesting and easy with the variety of delicious and healthy paleo recipes, recommended. Thanks author for creating us a new book for all of us!

This product uses a deceiving title to entice a sale. There are not 500 recipes, only 43 to be exact. 500 easy days of paleo? What does that have to do with anything about this book. Attempted to return and I am expected to pay $5.99 for returning a deceiving product. Buyer beware.

The Instant Pot recipes are very healthy, absolutely delicious and fast.I love my instant pot and this cookbook just helped me love it even more.I think it is a great source of delicious recipes and well worth the price.I would highly recommend this product to anyone who likes to cook. Terrible. Don’t even know why the number 500 is associated with this cookbook. There is like 23 recipes. Don’t bother buying. I would give no stars if possible

Wasted my money on this one. I would send it back, but I want to show my friends just how misleading the title is. There are not 500 recipes. There are not 500 days worth of recipes. There are 40 recipes. Am I to use these same recipes over and over for 500 days??? Very disappointed. For $15 I expected more. Never will buy one of her books again.

I was a student of Professor Hacking at University of Toronto in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He is brilliant and a Canadian all Canadians should be proud of. The fact I got to enjoy his thinking firsthand while he was formulating his ideas that became this book while I was an undergrad and then a graduate student in one of his departments will always be my good intellectual fortune. "Rewriting" is a landmark work on the reformation of ideas about memory in the nineteenth century and the consequences of this reformation on science and indeed on western culture in general. This book as well as his earlier The Taming of Chance are two of the best works in the history of science written in the late twentieth century. Both are highly recommended.

As a person diagnosed as DID, I was left with a lot of questions. My psychiatrist gave me a lot of reading to do but I found this one on my own. I haven't finished this book yet but so far it has been an immense help. I highly recommend it.

I normally like to read books like this. Some parts are interesting, but I lost interest. It's ok. 3 stars maybe I will pick it up again...by the way, this book is about multiple personality disorder. Syble, is far more interesting and based on a true story.

Truly an amazing piece of writing, scholarship, thought, etc. -- Hacking attempts to understand the modern fascination with memory and the unified, integral self through a careful study of the evolution of psychiatric thought on multiple-personality disorder. What he uncovers is important in cascading fashion for: multiple personality, psychiatry, history of science, discourse on memory, conceptions of historical time, even ontology. Hacking's underlying interest is twofold: one, what he calls 'looping' in the production of human types--here, a shorthand for the recursive reproduction of clinical disorders in patients. Essentially, this means that you go to see a doctor who assesses your symptoms and provides you with a diagnosis, a new description of your symptoms and an account of their cause. This re-description shapes the way you behave in the future, and both you and the doctor become more convinced that the cause is real (and accurately described) and that it can happen to others. As a result, 'types' are produced and therapists proliferate who specialize in treating these types.The second of his major interests, already suggested above, is the question of the temporality of scientific facts. This has been a concern for Bruno Latour as well, as in his famous essay on Ramses II. Hacking is interested here in the effects of belated re-descriptions of the past (hence the reference in the title to re-writing). The gist is that there is a strange kind of time that occurs when a present offers new descriptions of the past--we do not see these as present interventions that actively re-write a past, but rather as the revealing (or unveiling) of the truth that was always-already there. Here's Hacking from p. 94: "The events as described, which the multiple in therapy comes to feel as the cause of her illness, did not produce her present state. Instead, redescriptions of the past are caused by the present. Nevertheless, the patient feels that evens as newly described DO produce her present state. She feels that way because of the kinds of knowledge about memory that are current."

Strengths: A powerful treatment of the socio-philosophico-psychological development of an emergent psychiatric phenomenon ("category"), that of multiple personality disorder. Hacking navigates between "social construction" pure-and-simple, false memory syndrome, the analogy between remembering and story telling, and the invariant features of the conceptual framework needed for science. He is deeply empathic (the word "empathy" does not occur) towards the suffering of those who have experienced multiple personality disassociation. He is less so towards those who have tried to profit from it on talk shows and in the popular press. To read this text is to enjoy the dynamic give-and-take of a master at work. If there is a fan club, sign me up - I am unabashedly enthusiastic about this work.Weaknesses: I cannot find any real weaknesses, certainly none that can be explained concisely and without elaborate give-and-take. A call for amplification might include saying more about Forgiveness; but would perhaps require another book. At the risk of sounding flip, the German word for memory/recollection is misspelled on the bottom of page 202 and should be "Erinnerung." At another level, this may be a difficult book for many less sophisticated readers. That does not mean that they should not buy it and read it. They should. Just be prepared. I actually assigned it to a class in the psychology of cognitive and affective bases of behavior; and after some initial hesitation - and some guidance - they thought it was pretty cool. Doesn't get any better than that. Hacking brings an awesome learning and intellect to the task at hand, the difficulties of which are not to be underestimated. This book is good if you want a quick read on FGs in Medicinal Chemistry, you can read it in 3 sessions and pick up some concepts here and there, but you will need to look in other places to expand your knowledge more in depth. For that, I would rather save the money and use it towards the purchase of a good medicinal chemistry book, where you will find the same information and more.... don't get me wrong, this book here is perfect if you have to travel or commute to work by bus or train and need some reading, but to learn beyond it, then this is not for you,

I had to purchase this book for a Principles of Drug Action class in pharmacy school. The book is pretty easy to read but very brief on all topics. This makes for a quick read but if you don't understand a topic, you will have to look elsewhere because there is simply not much 'depth' here. Overall a good review if organic is fairly fresh and will probably serve as a good primer but you will need other texts for depth.

I am currently in pharmacy school and we recently had a class about medicinal chemistry. I have not had organic chemistry or used topics pertaining to in over 2 years. Our instructor rccommended this book and the layout is easy to follow and to understand. I wouldn't use this if you are just starting organic chemistry, but more so as a review for further graduate level courses.

This book is fairly easy to understand and a good refresher of functional groups. It helped me prepare for the medicinal chemistry portion of one of my pharmacy classes. I like how it gives examples of common drugs containing important heterocycles. One can also use an old ochem text book instead, but this book is so much lighter and easier to carry around. I read it while snuggled up in bed.

I purchased this in order to prepare myself for an medicinal chemistry course, and was able to chew through it slowly in about 2 weeks. I have not had organic chemistry in 3 years, and it was a fantastic source for bringing old knowledge, and some new, to the forefront of my mind.
