I love this book. Lots of great ideas to fill the tortillas

Book is colorful and has many great recipes but some are wrong and misleading to the authentic and proven process followed in Mexico to make tortillas from scratch. However, it is a good book to come up with ideas.

If you do not have another cookbook dealing with tortillas, this is a great, all-encompassing, book that covers all the basics: From choosing equipment, to recipes for making tortillas, and how to fill them and top them. There is nothing exceptionally innovative, unusual or exotic in these recipes, but that is not a bad thing: This book will give you a firm base for your own experimentation with tortilla flavors and fillings. And if you don’t care to experiment, this book will still give you plenty of recipes and combinations to work with for years to come.The author has a personable style of writing, and it is obvious that she enjoys teaching and is earnest about conveying instructions precisely.Seems like she covers all the bases and does not assume any experience level. But while not making any assumption about how much a reader may or may not know, she is able to avoid talking down to those more experienced.Covers both corn and flour tortilla-making techniques--separate from the recipes. So, if you are at the stage where you've already tried to make your own tortillas, yet aren't succeeding too well, this books will definitely help you out. The author instills confidence, too! (Be forewarned, though: You may still end up deciding that it's easier to buy hand-made and flavored tortillas in a grocery store or restaurant......)Interspersed among the recipes are good tips for all kinds of situations. For instance, how to keep lots of tortillas hot; how to assemble, how to roll and fold, how to fry a bowl shape.There are recipes for basic corn and flour tortillas, plus many ideas for additions to the basics. Also a recipe for nixtamal.There are recipes for blue corn tortillas, gorditas and sopes, gluten-free flour tortillas, sweet potato and squash tortillas, rice, bean, and grain tortillas.There is a chapter for rolled and folded tortillas, with lots of “reasonable” filling recipes, but none too far-fetched. There's a good assortment of sauces and salsas.There is a chapter on what else to use tortillas for: Nachos, chips, chalupas, flautas, quesadillas. Tacos, burritos, chimichangas and gorditas have their own chapter. So do enchaladas, fajitas and salads. So, you can see--everything possible is covered.I was also very happy to see a chapter on soups—soups that “beg” for a side of tortillas, in the words of the author. We love soup in our house and there are some nice ones included here.Page layout, type style and size, numbered and spaced instructions/steps: All make it easy on the eyes and easy for the brain to follow. There are well-done four-color pictures, too.Having personally gone through the process of choosing and buying a tortilla press, I think this author gives good advice, and that advice—if you take it—will save you time and money: In my experience, aluminum presses break, the CucinaPro electric is nifty, but still needs a comal to cook the tortilla properly, (and I’ve given my CucinaPro away). Cast iron, (Victoria), in my opinion, is really the way to go. And I’ve not tried the Saachi SA1650 Electric Tortilla Maker.*I received a temporary download of this cookbook from the publisher prior to its publication.

I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.The cookbook starts out with the cornerstone of many Mexican recipes: the tortilla. The author talks readers through the history, as well as how to make different types of tortillas. With recommendations on quality presses to make your own tortillas quick and easy, the author takes the guesswork out of shopping for the appliance.I like the fact that there is a prominent section devoted to Foundations: Fillings, Sauces, and Salsas. This makes it easy to prepare items ahead of time, instead of having to search through the main recipe for the instructions. The author gives page numbers to recipes that use the particular item, giving readers different options.The one recipe that I am most excited to try is the Beer Battered Fried Fish (p. 78), as I have been searching for a good recipe to make the great fish tacos. The Tacos (and more) section has recipes like Crispy Tacos, with options for fillings listed with page number references. A great collection of easy recipes can be found in the Snacks and Starters, with recipes for delectable treats such as Loaded Nachos, Flautas (Taquitos), and Chalupas. Rounding out the cookbook are: Main Frames: Enchiladas, Fajitas, and Taco Salads; Sop it up: Soups and Stews; and The Flatbread Chameleon and Tortilla Desserts. With inspirational ways of using tortillas from starters to desserts, readers will find many recipes to try and to use their creativity.With great accompanying photos and lighthearted quips throughout the pages, The Ultimate Tortilla Press Cookbook will give readers inspiration to try something new. This cookbook does an excellent job of teaching the basics, with great homemade foundations to some of the best food that Mexico has to offer. I highly recommend The Ultimate Tortilla Press Cookbook to other readers.

"The majority of the recipes in this book were previously published in COOKING WITH CHOCOLATE: ESSENTIAL RECIPES AND TECHNIQUE" which was published in 2011.There was no indication of this on the page and I bought this book not knowing the contents are pretty much the exact same. This book is much smaller in size with less recipes. If you are thinking of buying this I would strongly suggest you get the 2011 one instead. The design and layout of COOKING WITH CHOCOLATE is much more pleasing to look through and also when comparing the same recipes I find that CWC offers some useful notes that are omitted in CMC.

It won’t necessarily make you a chocolate professional, but you could boast of having a master’s degree in chocolate.The subtitle for this volume is Essential Recipes and Techniques. That is precisely what you get. First, a set of techniques, one per page, clearing giving you directions to manage your chocolate journey: how to melt, temper and mold. How to make ganache and cake batter, pastry cream and sauces. How to do these things and, equally important, why you need to do them. Contains great recipes, photos and instructions but not much on technique or the ins and out of working with chocolate. I have experience and love the recipes.

I just took the PSB and can say that the practice test in this book was similar to the test. It’s not 100% the same but you’ll be better prepared for the randomized questions on the actual test if you can master what is in this book.The instructional videos were helpful for quick remastering of subjects you probably haven’t thought about in years (geology and math for me).The book also explains how you’re scored on the PSB. It’s important to understand that so you can more effectively take the test.

I purchased the PSB practical nursing exam secrets study guide and practice exam questions after multiple people recommended both products! I rate both products with a 5 because I have found both products extremely helpful in my studying and preparation for this exam, the way everything is organized and the amount of material covered allows me to breathe a sigh of relief and feel like I am as prepared as possible! The material is easy to follow and understand and the videos from the links provide beneficial supplemental information for the topic!

I have used other study guides and this by far, is the best one yet. I have taken the PSB PN before and this study guide has been the closed to the material in the actual exam. I did pretty when I took it a few years ago and am very confident that I will be close to acing it this time around! I would recommend this product over others to anyone else taking the PSB PN exam!

If you're a huge fan of the show, then you'll pretty much know everything in this book. But it is PACKED with information. A great reference to the show. My tip: do not read this if you haven't seen the show completely, as it has spoilers. And I must emphasize, this is extremely through & informative. I was impressed.Definitely going to be buying vol. 2 to complete the collection.

I love Charmed. I thought that I would like this book. I did like the info in the book. The only thing I did not like was that the book was mostly black and white. I would have liked it better if it had some big nice pics. in it.

I have always been a big fan of condiments. I am a "sucker" for cool sounding combinations (lavendar whole grain mustard, anyone?) and love to use condiments in any number of recipes. Having this cookbook, which includes a variety of sauces, relishes, mustards, ketchups, and other useful condiments has been a boon. I love to cook, so being able to add something new (condiment-making) to try has been fun. In addition, I control the ingredients, so instead of processed chemical-laden products, I am able to control what goes into each condiment. The pictures are lovely and have inspired some homemade gift-giving. Jessica Harlan consistently scores with her recipes, photography, and writing!

When I get a new cookbook, I know I love it if I sit down and read it cover to cover without skipping around or just using the index in the back. Well, "Homemade Condiments" is a winner! It’s a beautiful book with easy to follow recipes and lots of extra, helpful hints that are missing from so many other cookbooks.I sought out this book to learn how to make homemade ketchups and mustards as part of my effort to feed our household more healthfully and avoid bottled items at the grocery that are full of impossible-to-pronounce ingredients. The best news is that this cookbook taught me so much more! Ms. Harlan’s recipes have helped expand my salad dressing repertoire along with sauces to accompany chicken, fish and steak, mayo from scratch (which I’ve always found intimidating until now) and the ultimate ginger dressing.I also love that Ms. Harlan gives quick, smart tips at the start of each recipe. For instance, when talking about making half of a basic mayo recipe, she lets you know, “If you don’t have a ½ tablespoon measuring spoon, half of 1 tablespoon is 1 ½ teaspoons.” I love cookbooks that arm you with little factoids that can be applied to any cooking situation. And the “Use It For” section under each recipe is a great place to get culinary inspiration for everything from a weeknight dinner idea to the next time you’re throwing a dinner party.I’m so excited I bought this cookbook now. The cover photos, pictures throughout and detailed, easy-to-follow recipes are going to produce great Christmas gifts. And I can’t wait to pair my concoctions with a copy of the book for friends, family and teachers. Highly recommend! Very easy to make recipes. My kids LOVE ketchup and I wanted to stop feeding them the store bought stuff. Recipe here allowed be to make the "healthy" ketchup and other condiments. Great recipe book!

I bought this book because, like so many other samples I have downloaded, it started off so well. It was interesting and well written. But once on the hook for the price of the book, it was all downhill. It’s like the author and her editor just stopped trying.Unending chapters full of tedious paragraphs full of rhetorical questions to herself? No thanks. Big mystery with a shocking reveal? Nope. None of the results she gets from dna tests are even remotely shocking or interesting. The blurbs for this book are very misleading. Don’t waste your money.

I liked this book very much. Alex’s personality shines through nicely, it’s a fun, nerdy wit. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there isn’t a big “a-ha” revelatory moment, but that is also the point. We do identify and identify with race, but the conclusions we may draw from anything we go out looking for may fall flat, whether it’s delving into history books, or getting shaky science DNA tests.We are all on earth biding time till death, it’s a personal journey, whatever we are to make of it, whatever history we want to tie ourselves to, whatever history we want to make for ourselves, it’s up to us.I like the idea another reviewer had, that Alex could go on to become a Burmese historian, there is a lot of unknown there. Definitely a lot of work!

Everybody should read this. A bracing corrective to all the artificial divisions so many of us have erected, and for what?

It’s a story about finding yourself in America. Looking back at the past and realizing that you’re, instead, in the present and the future.Honestly, didn’t find it too insightful. I didn’t really care to read her adventures through archives and continents, but I stuck through it and found her quiet acceptance of being American and metropolitan. Okay. Sure, I guess.Read it because Obama said it was “a thoughtful, beautiful meditation on what makes us who we are and the values and ideals that bind us together as Americans.” I found it more a rambling book about research methods, she’s grasping for more and there’s nothing there. Nonetheless, she talks about things I’ve been thinking about recently, and her prose is good.

Our search for roots takes us deep into the history of the world. I found myself fascinated by Burmese nationalism and the Franco-Prussian War as these things affected everyday citizens. A Howard Zinn way of looking at history. And the delve into the science behind DNA testing was helpful. Most of all I like her conclusions as she answers the questions “Who are we? To whom do we belong?”

Follow Alex Wagner as she traces her ancestry to Europe and Burma

Seemed to me that she reviewed the same stories again and again. It was a slow read. But an interesting topic.

Brilliant exploration of who we are based on family stories. Then exploring the realities of our past histories and current definition of being here in America. How we all must come to terms with self knowledge and self respect to be there for others...for a greater cause of affirming each other.

Twice I found this book hard to put down. When I finished it the first time, I started over again and read it all the way through again. I really liked the historical details that Brown gives such as the economic climate of the 1840s, the mores and customs of the time, what kinds of things the settlers were likely to have packed, etc. That means he stops the action of the story to provide such details, which might bother you if you want a quick action story, but I loved Brown's style. He begins his narrative before the settlers begin their journey and intersperses background information throughout their story of hardship. I liked learning such things as the political and economic context of the American western migration, getting a glimpse of nineteenth century family dynamics and hearing what modern climatologists say about the weather the Donner party endured. If you like historical context and details, this is your Donner party story.

I bought this book because everyone in my family read the author's The Boys in the Boat and loved it. I couldn't get into a story about a rowing team, though I may after reading this book. The Indifferent Stars Above is simply an amazing piece of nonfiction. I'm a California native and have known about the Donner Party forever. "Oh, yeah, those are the dopes who waited too long to cross the Sierras in winter. They got stuck in the snow and ended up eating each other to survive." But that isn't ALL that happened. They were betrayed by someone they trusted and took an untried road over the Sierras. This is an eye opener about what actually happened and how awful it was, as well as the actual characters/events of the settlement of CA, the golden state. Meticulously researched. Our forbearers, the ones with money and influence, weren't so hot. Read the book. you'll see. One of the things that I liked the best was that the author didn't just stop with the disaster, but followed the characters into their subsequent lives. That made the horror more palatable.

I simply cannot say enough about this writer! As soon as I start reading I am immediately hooked! His writing style and skill just bring the people and the circumstances alive! This is such a moving story about a family(s) who essentially give up their homes to go to CA (which isn't even a state at the time of these events). Imagining the hardships they suffered cannot even be put into words but Daniel Brown puts you there - in that moment with each of the individuals in this story. I am not a person who cries easily but I must say that after a certain horrific event in the story I simply put down my kindle and wept. Not a few tears....I wept. I loved at the end of the story how the author told you what became of the individuals who survived. There was some closure in knowing what became of these courageous people. My husband also read this story and we have built into an upcoming cross country trip plans to stop at Donner Lake based on reading this book. This story and book are remarkable!

An amazing tale of hope, strength, family, friends and then unimaginable hardships they endured through the eyes of a young newlyweds giving their entire soles to that end. Historical. fiction that was written in such a way to allow you to consider the psychological stresses these hardy American frontiersmen and women endured at the chance to work hard to provide a better future for each other on the other side of the country. The reality of those times and their journey make clear their strengths, fears, and unimaginable hardships involved in this undertaking. Bad advice was as common and useless then as it is now but to this group of travelers, it was a deadly encounter with charlatan that pointed them in the direction of their own eventual doom.Great book, heartwarming, detailed story telling and proves that women in those days were tough and hardy pioneers.I’ll never forget this story...it’s just too heartbreaking and also hopeful not leave behind in my thoughts

I gave this title three stars because it seemed well researched and informative, but didn't really capture me like I was hoping it would. I found the first 1/3 of the book difficult to get through because it got rather dull and a bit repetitive in some parts. The author did put a lot of effort into descriptions of places and scenery to give the reader a picture in the mind's eye of the setting, which I found to actually be a bit overdone to be honest. The exhaustive scenery descriptions had me skimming the paragraphs searching for the place where it got back to business. All in all I'm glad I stuck it out and read the whole thing, but I would suggest to those contemplating buying this to borrow it from the library instead. It's not the kind of book you read a second or third time, so in my opinion not really worth paying full price for.

This is a fascinating story, told in detail that indicates exhaustive research - but still it felt a bit flat as well as somewhat padded. In trying to describe the events by focusing on a single participant, author Brown is forced into a fair amount of conjecture, and never really makes the character of Sarah Graves Fosdick come to life.The epilogue in particular goes on too long - each segment could more or less be boiled down to "I drove to this place where stuff happened, and thought about the stuff that happened."Incidentally, there's a rather glaring formatting error in the Kindle edition of this book: following Chapter 17, chapters 16 and 17 are repeated.before the narrative heads into the Epilogue. This only adds to the sense that the material has been padded to make it book-length, and should be corrected.

It took a while to find the rhythm of this book. There were a lot of concepts that were just taken for granted, and these concepts were gradually explained throughout the book. Frankly I found that a bit confusing. Also I didn’t really pay attention to the chapter titles, and I was about 20% into the book before I realized there were two main characters in the story. That was totally my mistake, and it added to the confusion.As the story progressed, I began to enjoy the book a lot more, and it is a book I would recommend. In particular to fans of the cyberpunk genre. While not totally cyberpunk, it does have a bit of it.
