I'm a fan of the Steven Universe series and this book is so pretty.Guide to the Crystal Gems is funny and written from Steven's point of view.It contains small bio and about for the Crystal gems, Homeworld gems and even fusions! (Sadly Sardonyx is missing).Don't expect any big reveal, it is basically a guide to get to know the gems, If you have seen all the episodes so far you wont be reading any new info but still I really enjoyed it. It is simple and colorful. It comes with screenshots of the show, just a few new art.Hardcover, with hologram over the title that really goes with the themed Steven Universe book.Size is around 8.6 inches tall and 6.5 width. 96 pages.Great for anyone that is interested in the series.

This is a really great book for any Steven Universe fan. It has new knowledge on things, especially fusions. The book is narrated by Steven himself (besides for the fusion section, which is narrated by Garnet). It tells facts about each character, each fusion, and has snapshots of memorable moments that happened throughout the show. Some facts about the book itself:-It has 90 pages-It's 8 3/4 inches tall, 6 3/4 inches wide, and 1/2 inch deep-It has a note from Rebecca Sugar in it (pictured)-It has 2 blank pages (1 in the front, 1 in the back)-Each character has a different font and color, so it's easy to tell who's talking-Thick pagesI've had this book since it first released and I feel as though it's very sturdy, too. Definitely made for children. I think this is a book that's good for any Steven Universe fan, and I highly recommend it.

I pre-ordered the hardcover edition. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was the glittery holographic text on the cover. Nice touch. The pages are a gloss/mat finish of fairly heavy weight paper. The printing is very nice with tons of crisp, colorful illustrations. It is not filled with secret SU info, but there were a few facts in it that I didn't know including revealing Rose's manifesto for the first time. The title might make you believe that this is a primer for the show. However, if you have not made it through season one, the book will be a major spoiler. The book does what its title says. Describing the Crystal Gems as well as the Home World Gems and Fusions. It really doesn't talk about any of the human characters or locations. On the first page, Rebecca introduces Steven. Steven explains the Gems from his perspective and gets a bit introspective. In the last part of the book, Garnet walks us through the world of the fusions. There is a lot of dialog support from all the Crystal Gems. Each one is given their own font which is a great way to help the reader keep track of who's speaking. You can't help but read the book in the character's voices. As far as content goes, I think the best part is the insight you get from Steven's feelings and understanding of his world. If you are a fan, it's well worth the money.

So, if you're an older fan of the show looking for more plot, this is going to be a disappointment. Let's get that out of the way, seeing as so many of the fans of the show are young adults who are tearing the show apart, trying to solve the mysteries. This is pretty much all the information we already know, as of "Back to the Barn."For kids, though? This is phenomenal. Large fonts and simple descriptions help younger readers get through, even if they're fairly new to reading. The artwork is fairly simple--mostly the Gems standing around, along with screenshots from the show--but still in-line with show quality.I'd say that even the adult fans, like me, could enjoy this book, but don't go in desperate for info. You know this all already. It's for the kids, and for them, this is great.

Steven's narration about the Gems is genuinely sweet and outlines what fans already know. Emphasis on "what fans already know"; this book does not give any new insight or secrets into the series (except for some elaboration upon Ruby and Sapphire). I was also disappointed that Connie wasn't included in here, she's undoubtedly an important role in the series and a vital member of the Crystal Gems' team. Greg and Lion are absent too. It does include info on Peridot, Jasper, and Lapis, but still nothing new. It's worth the price and cool to have, but it just feels like an outline of basic Steven Universe knowledge. I would have preferred if it were a character design or series development art book.

It's a cute book. It's not full of shocking new facts, but it's incredibly sweet to see Steven's perspective of the gems and how much he loves them (which is a LOT). He also drops some hints on how his powers work, Garnet explains fusion a bit more, and Rose's disappearance is explained in detail. It's a cute book and I like reading from Steven's positive perspective! The only thing I have to complain about is a bit of the art. Garnet looks visibly "off" in some pictures, as does Amethyst, and some art is repeated. However, it's not the worst thing in the world, and it was still totally worth purchasing.

As others have said, this is not meant to be an encyclopedia for the show itself. That said, it's a great gift for anyone who's a fan of Steven Universe. Also, there are a few inspirational passages that anybody would find useful. My only criticism would be the exclusion of Sardonyx. I realize her debut wasn't similar to the other fusions but I still think she's noteworthy. I hope the author would consider publishing a second edition that includes that fusion.Otherwise, this is an excellent book and worth purchasing for your kids, friend, or yourself.

Review

"One of the beautiful and bright-shining stars in the firmament of hope for our desperate days is this couple, the Hahns, and this story of their life and their conversion." -- Peter Kreeft, Author, Back to Virtue"Dynamic, fresh, and devoted are terms which describe the approach that Scott and Kimberly Hahn take to assist in the renewal of the Church in the United States. Now, with their conversion, they are admirably suited to assist Catholics in re-discovering the treasure that has been entrusted to them. My hope is that many people will benefit from contact with Scott and Kimberly Hahn through their stories of conversion." --Most Reverend John Myers, Bishop of Peoria

Oh my goodness. I have never found something I have related to as much as this. Scott Hahn's journey is so much like mine and he and Kimberly's struggle to accept that Catholicism was okay was so easy for me to relate to. It was so comforting to see that I wasn't alone. I am so excited that I got to throw this book in the mix of my study materials. I have recently decided to convert to Catholicism and I am reading like crazy and this book was so great to add to my mix. It was easy enough to read and understand for even someone who doesn't have a firm foundation in theology. And my friend who is a firm anti-Catholic told me not to read this. And she was most certainly right! This book could convince any Protestant I'm 100% sure it could. What an excellent read. I felt all of the emotions Scott and Kimberly felt. I don't write reviews for everything, but if I love a product, I will. And here I am writing this review. It's so excellent, I found Scott's contact information and send him a thank you note. I can't wait for my next readings: Summa Theologica and the Catechism.11/10 recommend you buy this book

A motivational and inspiring account by a husband & wife couple who started off as rabid anti-Catholics who, through intellectual honesty and open-mindedness as well as spiritual inspiration and open hearts, made the faith journey to the staunch Catholic apologetics that they are now. Chockfull of quote worthy, highlight-worthy passages. A worthy companion piece to the works of Karl Keating and Patrick Madrid in providing the spiritual ammunition to defend one's Catholic faith against the non-stop and misguided accusations of so-called "Bible Christians." Dominus Vobiscum.--p. 5: "Please understand, my ardent anti-Catholicism sprang from a zeal for God and a charitable desire to help Catholics be Christians. And it was the Catholics who could outdrink and outswear me before I became a Christian, so I knew how much help they needed." Haha.--p. 10: "Kimberly means 'warrior maiden' in Gaelic." Och aye, lass, ye learn something new every day!--p. 16: "For one thing, I learned that many so-called Bible Christians prefer to base their beliefs on feelings, without praying and thinking through Scripture."--p. 21: "On September 31," say what?!?! Typo??--p. 28: "So I resorted to an old family saying: 'Even a blind hog can find an acorn.' I mean, after two thousand years, the Catholic Church was bound to get something right." I thought it was a blind squirrel, but eh, why nitpick?"Sometimes we would get together on Friday nights, meeting at Howard Johnson’s or some local pub for pizza and beer in order to talk theology until three in the morning," well, at least they weren't the militant teetotaller holier-than-thou temperance types!p. 30: "In fact, I discovered that nowhere did Saint Paul ever teach that we were justified by faith alone! Sola fide was unscriptural!" But so many "Bible Christians" are too closed-minded to ever acknowledge this fact.--p. 32: "In James 2: 24, the Bible teaches that 'a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.' Besides, Saint Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13: 2, '. . . if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.'"--p. 41: "We gradually became convinced that Martin Luther let his theological convictions contradict the very Scripture that he supposedly chose to obey rather than the Catholic Church."--p. 44: "I had already shown my parishioners that the one and only place where Christ used the word 'covenant' was when he instituted the Eucharist, or communion, as we called it. Yet we only took communion four times a year."p. 45: "Next I took my parishioners through the Gospel of John, and, much to my shock, I discovered that the Gospel was loaded with sacramental imagery."--p. 52: "'Yeah, 2 Thessalonians 2: 15”' I said weakly. 'What does that say again?' 'Paul tells the Thessalonians, "So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter."'"--p. 53: "'**you really can’t demonstrate sola scriptura from Scripture. The Bible doesn’t expressly declare that it is the Christian’s only authority.** In other words, Scott, sola scriptura is essentially the historic confession of the Reformers, over and against the Catholic claim that it is Scripture plus the Church and Tradition. For us, then, it is a theological presupposition, our starting point rather than a proven conclusion.'" [emphasis added] WOW!!--p. 99: "After finishing one particularly exciting session—on 'A Biblical Explanation of Indulgences'—an older parishioner named Joe announced, 'Yep, sometimes it takes an immigrant to explain it for the natives.'" Haha, true enough, kinda like with patriotism, i.e. naturalised citizens schooling native-born ones.--p. 175: "We appreciated our evangelical tradition, where people sing and pray wholeheartedly. So, one of the elements of worship our family has most appreciated at Franciscan University is the way people participate. As Scott says, 'If the Eucharist doesn’t make you want to sing, what would?'" And as more than one of my priests and fellow Catholic lay members has said, "When you sing, you pray twice."--p. 179: "Let’s face it, many of these non-Catholics put us to shame. With Bible in hand, plus lots of zeal, they do far more with less than many Catholics who have the fullness of Faith in the Church but who are famished and fast asleep. We share with them so much of the truth about Christ in Scripture; but what they lack is nothing less than the real and substantial presence of Christ in the Eucharist. To state it simply, they study the menu while we enjoy the Meal!"

Could not put this down. As a cradle a Catholic, I cannot explain my faith as well as Scott and Kimberly Hahn. They are an amazing couple and a testament to one, holy, catholic and apostolic faith. To have done the research that Scott did and affirm that we are the true Church is a testament to his integrity . Will be recommending this book to anyone who wants to know more about Catholicism.

I joined the church back in 2004, but wandered away for far too long. Recently, I have felt God calling me back, so I bought this to help me along. Written from the perspective of both writers, this is an approachable book with a lot of emotional insight. It is a relatively short and easy read. I quickly and eagerly devoured the material. I highly recommend this title to anyone who is interested in learning about the Roman Catholic Church.

This book made me appreciate my faith and gave me an outline to defend it. I was so inspired that I bought a copy for each of my parents. It helped me better appreciate their marriage, even through all the struggles. I think everyone can relate to Kimberly Hahn, especially. She reminds me of Peter. I saw much of their struggles in my parents marriage, and the way they handled themselves gave a beautiful perspective of how my parents could also do better. My mother had qualms about Mary and saints prior to reading this book, just a month ago. Instantly she started reading apologetics and I have truly never seen my parents so happy together. Coming back from college for the summer, I feel like the odd one out, because they are best friends. What I'm trying to say is that this book spurred my conversion, my mom's, and my dad's... all in one semester.

A surprising book in that the non-catholic churches teach that Rome is so wrong...That the earliest document from the church in the first centuries support the Roman catholic church. Easy reading by someone who confronted the issues as to why the Roman catholics were wrong and found that the Roman catholic church is home.

Reading this book has had exerted an effect on my spirituality nothing short of profound. I have a deepened awe for the beautiful truths preserved by the Catholic Church, and a newfound ability to defend my faith using the scriptural basis that is intimately intertwined with the Church. This is truly a love story: a love story between Christ and his Church, conveyed through the lens of the love story between Scott and Kimberly. A must read for any Catholic or for any person wanting to learn more about the real truths of the Catholic Church.
