We bought this as a gift for our nephew's birthday. He is only 1, but they have a ton of toys and clothes from their older son, and books are what they just need most right now. His mom opened the gift more so than the baby. And when she saw this particular book among the others, she laughed so hard! She asked where did we find it because it was so different and funny. So I would definitely recommend this to buy for people who like really silly books to read to their kids.

This made a lovely gift. People who have young children always love books about children being eaten by reptiles.

My son In first grade, was a VIP of the week and had the chance to choose a book that I would come in and read for his class. He chose this one! All of the kids absolutely loved it. Would totally buy it again and I’m interested in seeing what other books this author has written as well! It’s a funny little story!

That isn't this book. This book is, in my opinion, bad for both. Bit dark and dull for the lil ones, and really boring for the taller ones. This was a recommendation based on our purchase and appreciation for the All My Friends Are Dead books. Those are fun. This is early American toilet paper that was made too late.

This cute little book made my 5yr old boy smile and giggle. When I asked what he learned from the book, he said "to always eat a healthy breakfast to grow big and strong". I am happy with that. I thought the ending was cute but abrupt. It left us wanting more - again, a good thing from a book. Great, quick read for bedtime.

My daughter (3years old) is obsesses with all things alligator/crocodile. This boom is so cute It has colorful drawings. It is about Achilles the little alligator who refuses to eat his healthy food BC he would rather eat a child, but when he goes down to the water and he sees a little girl he wants to eat, but he is so small, that she just picks him up and tosses him in the water. After that encounter he decides he should eat the healthy food his parents have for him so he can grow big and strong. We also bought the Melissa and Doug alligator sleeping bag to be her Achilles, which made this boom even better!

My 3-year-old girl adores this book! And so do we - her parents. It's cute, fun, a bit irreverent... but it's also a nice subtle little lesson for picky eaters. Our daughter has actually eaten bites of things she previously avoided because she said she wants to grow bigger like Achilles does! That's an added success I wasn't expecting.

Bought one for my niece over a year ago. Visited recently and it's still on top of the stack of books they read. That's a win in my book!We bought a second copy for friends that just had their first child. The classics are great, but everyone gets those.

I got this for a couple kids I babysit (ages four and five, siblings) and they absolutely love it! This book is so adorable, vibrant, and certainly has that subtle capacity to be a teaching tool without sounding too obvious. Plus, if the kids keep asking me to read it, then it's gotta be awesome to them too, five stars for the great laughs we got from this one :D

Black Book of Poems by Vincent Hunanyan seems to be a simple read in which the reader can devour the written thoughts in under a half-hour.However, like a fine wine, this book cannot be gulped down, but needs to be savored. The poetic musings are like the wine's bouquet and need to be inhaled and the provocative thoughts need to be swirled around in the mind and the heart. Additionally, the sincere and naked thoughts need to be reread like a connoisseur of wine asking for another refreshing sip.The poems are simple yet deep and express the author's heart-felt reflections on the mundane and sometimes ugly events in life. Once such poem addresses a drunken husband's rage resulting in spousal abuse and confronts the reader with pain experienced and broken promises.Another poem is entitled, "Ode to a Best Friend" and talks about motherhood. This particular poem, for this reviewer, needed to be shared with others.Black Book of Poems by Vincent Hunanyan is not your typical book of poems where flowery speech is penned and enticing words of love and devotion are expressed. It is however, a provocative compilation of simple poems that capture real life situations and perhaps call the reader to contemplation and action.

I'm new to reading poetry but of course I know what traditional poems sound like with rhymes and such. Amazon suggested this book to me bc of my previous (and first ever) poetry book purchase. That book did not have a traditional rhyming format and I enjoyed it bc I didn't feel like it was over my head with veiled innuendos using big words, etc.So when I read the first poem in this book and saw that it was in a more traditional rhyming style I was like, oh no, this is going to be way too intellectual for me and I will never get any of it. Which is the reason why I never took interest in poetry in the past; it was as if someone was writing in a foreign language when I would read those (seemingly) pretentious works. initially I was intimidated having jumped to the conclusion that because these poems had a great deal of rhyming, I was going to be again reading something that was far beyond my level of comprehension. I was wrong. That's not to say the authors work is of a lower caliber just because I was able to get into it. I am not trying to imply that my level of comprehension is equal to his level of skill because that's far from true.His work spoke to me and even though there were those occasional pieces or words that were over my head, there was a down to earth quality to his writings that made me feel I was "allowed" to not get all of it, but yet still "get all of it". Does that make sense to anyone else other than me? Probably not. Lol.Point is, this book really made me enjoy this style of poetry which was one that alluded me til now. The preface of the book was just as valuable as the work inside bc of his explanation of relative perception, etc.I enjoyed the short stories too. I was able to read the whole book in one sitting and that is important to me bc I am unable (unwilling?) to read any book of great length.For some people a book this length would be just an appetizer, for me, it was a 4 course meal.Vincent, you taught me something new today and you gave me food for thought. Thanks very much for sharing. :)

It is very seldom that I purchase a book of poems, and when I do, it’s usually romance. Though when I came across this thing and saw the title, I immediately wanted to read it. Black Book of Poems wasn’t just about a collection of poems written just for the sake of compiling them into a book. The poems actually reminded me of the things we used to analyze during my literature classes. I especially liked the poems Mom Keeps On Crying and Drunken Dad, as both poems talk about the things that are commonly happening in most of the households these days. There were even a couple of short stories at the end of it which are both full of symbolism, and they also reminded me of the things I made a paper about in my lit classes.I believe that the poems are written based on the author’s actual experiences, as there are some poems that obviously has a “personal touch”, otherwise, it is his own perception about things, as well as the things he was able to witness in his daily life. This book could be a material for discussion in classrooms because the topics talked about in the poems are very relatable to the people these days.

I am yet to finish this volume. Moving straight on from Volume 1 was perhaps too much, given the extraordinary amount of information which is presented; I have nothing but admiration for the research and knowledge the author has poured into these works. His jocular and irreverent tone is refreshing and enables the reading of what would often be dry history - he brings it alive. Too much of this tone in the end got a little tedious, though that is my problem rather than his. I found this second volume to start to wander a bit off track around a third of the way through, especially a significant deviation into New Zealand history for no apparent reason, and it became as though the author had a lot of scraps of information about various matters he'd collected and wanted to make use of, anywhere - had his editor lost interest at this point also? I will return and re-read this volume because the information is brilliantly researched, novel in presentation and vitally interesting. It is a good read and I need just take a break before resuming, I think.

Mark Twain was right when he commented that no one could make up Australian history. Unbelievable characters, strangely bizarre and down right comical came to Australia in its early days. Who could ever invent a cross dressing, ostrich riding highwayman, or a blind one for that matter, a prison full of female convicts simultaneously mooning a visiting state governor, and so on. Lawyer and journalist David Hunt has in his two books captured some of the best. It would be unbelievable if fiction but they all actually existed.

Everything that made Girt enjoyable is back again to rock your world in True Girt. This volume picks up where the original left off, and it spends more time with the history of New Zealand, detailing the people and economic relationships the country shared with Australia in its formative years. Rum, sheep, and outlaws rampage across the pages, and none of them are safe from the author's absolutely savage sense of humor that makes this book simultaneously hilarious and educational. If only every history book was this much fun to read!

Laugh out loud is just so right! This is the way to read history: factual, but highlighting the Good Bits...especially at the expense of the Australians...who, as a little brother Kiwi, I believe should always be kept in their place by constant reminders of those bits of their history they'd prefer forgotten :-) Don't ignore the footnotes on your way through: in my Kindle edition readily accessible as you go - they provide many of the funniest and most irreverent, iconoclastic juicy bits!) I loved this so much that I got True Grit 2 straight away, and am reading it slowly, trying to remember bits to remind my Aussie friends about at parties...

A real eye opener to Australian history that we should have been taught in school. Written in an entertaining way so you don't get bogged down with just facts and dates. David isn't afraid to present the good bits only. This book is chokkas full of shameful bits from our past that often get ignored, but without those bits we would not be the nation we are today. Very east to read. Highly recommended.

With them, Harry leads a miserable existence, until one day an owl brings him a mysterious letter. What the letter contains opens an entirely new world for Harry, one that begins with this enchanting first book in the series.I came to the Harry Potter series quite late; I didn't read them as a kid due to the witchcraft controversy, and just never got around to it after that. I finally bought Sorcerer's Stone for my Kindle to see what all the fuss was about...and because, I admit, I've always wanted a little magic in my life in some form. J.K. Rowling does not disappoint. Her writing is geared toward children, so there are some things I would normally object to, such as telling over showing, narrative summary, and the use of adverbs to describe how people do and say things. But again, considering the audience, I'm inclined to let that stuff slide.The story itself is, as I mentioned, enchanting. Harry has the perfect pair of eyes through which to view Hogwarts for the first time. Reading this book felt like starting at a new school myself--everything is new and different, there are new friends and adversaries to meet, and adventure waits everywhere. J.K. Rowling does a beautiful job describing and presenting the Hogwarts environment. Harry, Ron, and Hermione deal with typical middle school stuff, such as strict teachers and school bullies. But how many other kids do you know who also bond over getting a mountain troll out of the girls' room? Playing a literally killer game of chess? Smuggling a dragon onto the school roof so it can be transported to safety? Each mini-adventure and plot point is excellently done.As for the characters, they're engaging and incite plenty of empathy. This is especially true and important for protagonist Harry. In the beginning, he naturally incites a lot of pathos, but this boy is not a victim. Once he gets his legs under him, and his self-esteem gets a needed boost, he becomes quite the little hero without being obnoxious about it. My favorite scenes definitely involve him standing up to Draco Malfoy, especially for other students like Neville.Ron gets a chuckle every now and then, although he's frustratingly impulsive at times. Basically, he's the kind of kid you just want to hug. As for Hermione, I can see her becoming one of my fictitious soul sisters. Like her, I was a diligent and perfectionist student, though I hope for my classmates' sake I wasn't quite that much of a know-it-all. Like Hermione, I also struggled with making friends, but those I have are friends for life. (I'm not gonna lie; I'm kind of mad and disappointed that this isn't the Hermione Granger series).J.K. throws in a couple of twists at the end; they're nothing an adult couldn't figure out, but they are enjoyable. I also loved the trio's final adventure as they searched for the Stone, particularly Hermione's talent at solving the logic puzzle. Other highlights for me included the Mirror of Erised, Harry's first Quidditch game against Slytherin, and Hagrid himself, a well-drawn secondary character. He sort of acts as Harry's fairy godfather...or should that be hairy godfather?For any parents who might be wondering about the witchcraft element: No worries. What's here is downright tame, if it exists at all. It's mostly kids waving wands around, changing matches into needles, and learning how to fly on broomsticks. The scene in the Forbidden Forest involves some talk of astrology and the slaying of a unicorn, but nothing too intense. Personally, I'm ready to put on my Ravenclaw robes, pick up my fictional wand (beechwood with unicorn core, 10.5 inches, slightly springy) and read the next book.

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences.The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*
