Black Book of Poems by Vincent Hunanyan seems to be a simple read in which the reader can devour the written thoughts in under a half-hour.However, like a fine wine, this book cannot be gulped down, but needs to be savored. The poetic musings are like the wine's bouquet and need to be inhaled and the provocative thoughts need to be swirled around in the mind and the heart. Additionally, the sincere and naked thoughts need to be reread like a connoisseur of wine asking for another refreshing sip.The poems are simple yet deep and express the author's heart-felt reflections on the mundane and sometimes ugly events in life. Once such poem addresses a drunken husband's rage resulting in spousal abuse and confronts the reader with pain experienced and broken promises.Another poem is entitled, "Ode to a Best Friend" and talks about motherhood. This particular poem, for this reviewer, needed to be shared with others.Black Book of Poems by Vincent Hunanyan is not your typical book of poems where flowery speech is penned and enticing words of love and devotion are expressed. It is however, a provocative compilation of simple poems that capture real life situations and perhaps call the reader to contemplation and action.

I'm new to reading poetry but of course I know what traditional poems sound like with rhymes and such. Amazon suggested this book to me bc of my previous (and first ever) poetry book purchase. That book did not have a traditional rhyming format and I enjoyed it bc I didn't feel like it was over my head with veiled innuendos using big words, etc.So when I read the first poem in this book and saw that it was in a more traditional rhyming style I was like, oh no, this is going to be way too intellectual for me and I will never get any of it. Which is the reason why I never took interest in poetry in the past; it was as if someone was writing in a foreign language when I would read those (seemingly) pretentious works. initially I was intimidated having jumped to the conclusion that because these poems had a great deal of rhyming, I was going to be again reading something that was far beyond my level of comprehension. I was wrong. That's not to say the authors work is of a lower caliber just because I was able to get into it. I am not trying to imply that my level of comprehension is equal to his level of skill because that's far from true.His work spoke to me and even though there were those occasional pieces or words that were over my head, there was a down to earth quality to his writings that made me feel I was "allowed" to not get all of it, but yet still "get all of it". Does that make sense to anyone else other than me? Probably not. Lol.Point is, this book really made me enjoy this style of poetry which was one that alluded me til now. The preface of the book was just as valuable as the work inside bc of his explanation of relative perception, etc.I enjoyed the short stories too. I was able to read the whole book in one sitting and that is important to me bc I am unable (unwilling?) to read any book of great length.For some people a book this length would be just an appetizer, for me, it was a 4 course meal.Vincent, you taught me something new today and you gave me food for thought. Thanks very much for sharing. :)

It is very seldom that I purchase a book of poems, and when I do, it’s usually romance. Though when I came across this thing and saw the title, I immediately wanted to read it. Black Book of Poems wasn’t just about a collection of poems written just for the sake of compiling them into a book. The poems actually reminded me of the things we used to analyze during my literature classes. I especially liked the poems Mom Keeps On Crying and Drunken Dad, as both poems talk about the things that are commonly happening in most of the households these days. There were even a couple of short stories at the end of it which are both full of symbolism, and they also reminded me of the things I made a paper about in my lit classes.I believe that the poems are written based on the author’s actual experiences, as there are some poems that obviously has a “personal touch”, otherwise, it is his own perception about things, as well as the things he was able to witness in his daily life. This book could be a material for discussion in classrooms because the topics talked about in the poems are very relatable to the people these days.

I am yet to finish this volume. Moving straight on from Volume 1 was perhaps too much, given the extraordinary amount of information which is presented; I have nothing but admiration for the research and knowledge the author has poured into these works. His jocular and irreverent tone is refreshing and enables the reading of what would often be dry history - he brings it alive. Too much of this tone in the end got a little tedious, though that is my problem rather than his. I found this second volume to start to wander a bit off track around a third of the way through, especially a significant deviation into New Zealand history for no apparent reason, and it became as though the author had a lot of scraps of information about various matters he'd collected and wanted to make use of, anywhere - had his editor lost interest at this point also? I will return and re-read this volume because the information is brilliantly researched, novel in presentation and vitally interesting. It is a good read and I need just take a break before resuming, I think.

Mark Twain was right when he commented that no one could make up Australian history. Unbelievable characters, strangely bizarre and down right comical came to Australia in its early days. Who could ever invent a cross dressing, ostrich riding highwayman, or a blind one for that matter, a prison full of female convicts simultaneously mooning a visiting state governor, and so on. Lawyer and journalist David Hunt has in his two books captured some of the best. It would be unbelievable if fiction but they all actually existed.

Everything that made Girt enjoyable is back again to rock your world in True Girt. This volume picks up where the original left off, and it spends more time with the history of New Zealand, detailing the people and economic relationships the country shared with Australia in its formative years. Rum, sheep, and outlaws rampage across the pages, and none of them are safe from the author's absolutely savage sense of humor that makes this book simultaneously hilarious and educational. If only every history book was this much fun to read!

Laugh out loud is just so right! This is the way to read history: factual, but highlighting the Good Bits...especially at the expense of the Australians...who, as a little brother Kiwi, I believe should always be kept in their place by constant reminders of those bits of their history they'd prefer forgotten :-) Don't ignore the footnotes on your way through: in my Kindle edition readily accessible as you go - they provide many of the funniest and most irreverent, iconoclastic juicy bits!) I loved this so much that I got True Grit 2 straight away, and am reading it slowly, trying to remember bits to remind my Aussie friends about at parties...

A real eye opener to Australian history that we should have been taught in school. Written in an entertaining way so you don't get bogged down with just facts and dates. David isn't afraid to present the good bits only. This book is chokkas full of shameful bits from our past that often get ignored, but without those bits we would not be the nation we are today. Very east to read. Highly recommended.

I finally bought Sorcerer's Stone for my Kindle to see what all the fuss was about...and because, I admit, I've always wanted a little magic in my life in some form. J.K. Rowling does not disappoint. Her writing is geared toward children, so there are some things I would normally object to, such as telling over showing, narrative summary, and the use of adverbs to describe how people do and say things. But again, considering the audience, I'm inclined to let that stuff slide.The story itself is, as I mentioned, enchanting. Harry has the perfect pair of eyes through which to view Hogwarts for the first time. Reading this book felt like starting at a new school myself--everything is new and different, there are new friends and adversaries to meet, and adventure waits everywhere. J.K. Rowling does a beautiful job describing and presenting the Hogwarts environment. Harry, Ron, and Hermione deal with typical middle school stuff, such as strict teachers and school bullies. But how many other kids do you know who also bond over getting a mountain troll out of the girls' room? Playing a literally killer game of chess? Smuggling a dragon onto the school roof so it can be transported to safety? Each mini-adventure and plot point is excellently done.As for the characters, they're engaging and incite plenty of empathy. This is especially true and important for protagonist Harry. In the beginning, he naturally incites a lot of pathos, but this boy is not a victim. Once he gets his legs under him, and his self-esteem gets a needed boost, he becomes quite the little hero without being obnoxious about it. My favorite scenes definitely involve him standing up to Draco Malfoy, especially for other students like Neville.Ron gets a chuckle every now and then, although he's frustratingly impulsive at times. Basically, he's the kind of kid you just want to hug. As for Hermione, I can see her becoming one of my fictitious soul sisters. Like her, I was a diligent and perfectionist student, though I hope for my classmates' sake I wasn't quite that much of a know-it-all. Like Hermione, I also struggled with making friends, but those I have are friends for life. (I'm not gonna lie; I'm kind of mad and disappointed that this isn't the Hermione Granger series).J.K. throws in a couple of twists at the end; they're nothing an adult couldn't figure out, but they are enjoyable. I also loved the trio's final adventure as they searched for the Stone, particularly Hermione's talent at solving the logic puzzle. Other highlights for me included the Mirror of Erised, Harry's first Quidditch game against Slytherin, and Hagrid himself, a well-drawn secondary character. He sort of acts as Harry's fairy godfather...or should that be hairy godfather?For any parents who might be wondering about the witchcraft element: No worries. What's here is downright tame, if it exists at all. It's mostly kids waving wands around, changing matches into needles, and learning how to fly on broomsticks. The scene in the Forbidden Forest involves some talk of astrology and the slaying of a unicorn, but nothing too intense. Personally, I'm ready to put on my Ravenclaw robes, pick up my fictional wand (beechwood with unicorn core, 10.5 inches, slightly springy) and read the next book.

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*

Just what does an oriental girl doing a ballet jete have to do with a story about a NC Irish step dancer? Nothing. Please, this is a great book; it deserves a better cover. I am a sucker for coming of age books about hard life lessons moving a child into adulthood--this book has a twist in which the kid has the maturity and insight, but her parents need the hard life lessons to grow up. Most authors go from one extreme to another in portraying families--either parents are the Waltons and Cleavers or else drunken abusive monsters. This is one of the rare in-between books about a really human family of flawed, foolish, but well-intentioned losers, trying hard to force their kids into their own misconceived loser mold while being too proud and set in their loser ways to allow their children to be independent individuals, that is, until life smacks them upside the head--hard--more than once. This is not fluff fiction but heart and soul realism, tragic at times but filled with enough human spirit and resilience to not be dismal.Hickman is one of my favorite authors, I have got to read the rest of her novels just to see if she has ever written any book that is less than wonderful.

What is not to like about Patricia's Hickman's latest story? This is a tale of two sisters in the early 1960's, in a small southern town, ripe with scandals, family secrets, sexual tensions, and racists, and tragedy. But in all this mess, you will find love and courage and hope. This story gripped me from the first page and I couldn't get away from it as I went through the twists and turns and surprises right along with Flannery Curry. I really had no idea how things would turn out and found I kept holding my breath. Next time I read it, I can breathe.

But, I wasn't sure it was a Christian fiction book or not. Which was okay, I was just under the impression that it was. Christian. I'm used to most Christian fiction having scripture throughout and leaving me thinking more about God and the Bible. This book did not. At the end, there was mention of God. However, the storyline is great and kept my attention to the end. It had very interesting parts, especially the neighbors behind her and the dancing/ Story Chair. I'd love to know where that idea came from. I haven't read anything based on this time period of when Blacks were segregated from Whites in everything in America. So, that was interesting to me because it was a new time period for me. Good book, just don't expect it to tie scripture throughout.

Set in Moore County NC in the sixties, the author draws on the real tension between the races to create a story about healing relationships. The main character, Flannery, is a teenager who has to work through difficult relationships with her family, her neighborhood, and her friends. The wisdom and love of a neighboring family who, as the only black family in a white neighborhood, have to endure persecution, give Flannery the courage to face her own demons.Hickman allows us to feel Flannery's pain and watch her grow into a wise young woman. It doesn't descend into the melodramatic or paint a syrupy sweet picture of teenage life; Flannery is a very real character, dealing with real issues, such as death, divorce, step-parents, financial worries, discrimination, and the uncontrollable circumstances of life.I really enjoyed it, and have to confess I put off doing other things in order to finish it, which is the test of how good a book is. The characters are engaging, the story is fast-moving, and the resolution is satisfying. What more could you ask for in a novel? Another winner from Patricia Hickman!

Loved this book and will be downloading more from Patricia Hickman. It was well written and the story was nicely developed. I was hooked from the beginning.Just when I thought I had the plot figured out, she threw in twists and turns. I laughed and cried. Great story!I grabbed this book when it was free at the recommendation of another great author. However, had I paid for it, I would be just as happy! A few minor editorial issues, but not many!To defend the cover, she dyes her hair in the story. However, a head of beautiful, red curls would have been much more eye catching. Maybe the red clashed with the yellow? ;)

The back and forth of the story was a bit confusing for me at first and then I realized what was happening. I kept reading because I wanted to know more. The intertwining stories of Flannery and her neighbors and her best friend and her dance teacher and her parents and her mother was amazing and I admire anyone who can write like that. It is about a sad time in the history of our country. About dysfunctional families and a child's dreams and fears. I actually cried near the end. This was not a preachy Christian novel. But it was definitely spiritual and I enjoyed the relationship between Theo and Flannery.

WhileI am not sure how possible all that was tied together in this book might be in 'real life' it showed how the black and white communities CAN and do get along. Bias/racialism is ramped not only in the south but in the north also, so to see how the innocence of a child and the love for humanity of an adult can overcome such obsticles is refreshing to say the least. I am sure many will think it is an impossible plot, but I do believe that to a great degree, it has happened and will happen again.

This book is written from the perspective of Flannery Curry, a teenager in the 60s whose claim to fame was her Irish dancing... that is until a tragic accident turned her world upside-down. This book has all the right elements - mystery, intrigue, drama... and with it taking place in the 60s, there are some racial tension issues as well. Flannery grows through all of these things and becomes a strong young woman through it all, but the trials in the midst are severe.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.I couldn't wait to start reading the third and last book in this series! At the end of book 2 we got a hint of what Chloe was up to and I was to excited to finally get her story. Foul Play is a perfect ending to this series. It's filled with an amazing romance, two great characters, a bit of mystery and suspense and three epilogues!Foul Play is Chloe's story and it wraps up the mystery. This book was a bit more focused on the mystery and suspense than the previous books. Chloe is convinced that Vincent's brother is wrongly convicted of murder and she wants to find out what happened. It all comes together in this book and there are some ties back to the previous books and some hints we got there that tie into the mystery. I thought the mystery was well done, I was surprised by part of it and not so much by another part of it. I liked how it all got wrapped up with a satisfying conclusion.Chloe is the youngest sister of the three, she is really sweet and has a huge heart. She believes the best of people, wants to help people and fights for justice. She brings light and laughter wherever she goes and it just seems perfect she would fall for the school's troublemaker Vincent Mancini. Chloe and Vincent are so different, but they are so perfect for each other.This book starts right in the middle of things. After an evening of volunteering Chloe gets attacked and Vincent shows up to help her. She gets a glimpse of the real Vincent and what follows is an awesome romance. They slowly get to know each other and fall hard for each other. They are just so adorable together and they made such a great couple.Vincent comes from a family who is involved with all sorts of crime. My heart broke for him and his bad home situation and that he had to deal with that. Everyone thinks the worst of him, so he just plays along with that. It was awesome to see when Chloe got a glimpse of the real Vincent and fall for that person and we slowly see that all the glares and angry behavior is mostly a front. He does have a bit of a temper, but I felt like that fit his character.I loved these two together. Where Vincent seems dark, Chloe is all light and they work so well together. I especially liked how Chloe slowly changed Vincent's outlook on life, got him to see that not everyone is bad and bring light to his dark life. And the ending was perfect. I also appreciated how the book was low on drama and there is this scene that felt so realistic where Vincent tries to do what he thinks is the right thing. The relationship struggles that they had felt realistic and I liked how for the most part their relationship isn't easy, but they do stand together and there's no miscommunication going on.It was awesome how this book wrapped things up and then we skip a year forward and get an epilogue from all three sisters. I loved it! It was so awesome to see how they are doing a year later, what they're doing and how their romance is going now. I think it was brilliant how the author gave each of them their own epilogue.To summarize: This book was an awesome ending to this series. Foul Play tells Chloe's story and it brings the conclusion to the mystery. The mystery got wrapped up nicely, with some surprises along the way and I liked how there are some hints in earlier books already. Everything falls on it's place here. This book might be my favorite romance so far! I loved Chloe and Vincent together, she's all brightness and positivity, while he has a more negative opinion of the world and has a bad home situation. I liked how great these two are together and I loved their romance. There was little drama, no miscommunication and the struggles they faces felt realistic. The book wraps things up nicely and there is an epilogue from all three of the sisters, which was great! I you're looking for a great Young Adult Romance series with great romances, a bit of mystery/ suspense and little drama, then I can't recommend this series enough!

I was a little sad to have read through these three books so fast. By the end of Foul Play I felt invested in these characters and just couldn't believe that I was already done!Maddie, Max, and Chloe have had their lives uprooted during the middle of their senior and junior years. Going from being the star players on their all-girl baseball team in Columbus, they are now having to prove they are good enough to be placed on the Armitage high school team.Chloe is the youngest Barlow sister, and the one that everyone thinks needs to be watched and protected. Chloe has a tender heart and believes that not everyone is who rumors make them out to believe, she's chooses to see everyone as good until they prove her differently. This includes the school bad boy Vincent Mancini. When he rescues her from what could've been the worst night of her life, she knows there is a different side to him than the bad his family name has brought him.What starts out as leaving notes soon turns into a budding romance. However, Vincent is still a Mancini and his uncle won't let him forget it. Now Vincent not only has to protect Chloe from his family members, there is a new threat out there trying to keep the towns secrets just that...secret. With Chloe digging trying to prove Vincent's brothers innocence, powerful people are willing to do whatever necessary to keep them from digging too much into the case.While Chloe and Vincent's story may not have been my favorite, Chloe is the kind of character I love! She doesn't judge and believes in letting people make their own name for themselves.

Foul Play is the 3rd and final book in the Barlow Sisters series! Chloe Barlow has always followed the path her older twin sisters walked until they moved to Armitage. It takes one night after volunteering at a homeless shelter for Chloe to nearly get attacked until the famed bad boy of the school, Vincent Marcini comes to save the day.With Vincent being the total bad boy and nobody wanting to have anything to do with him due to his last name, Chloe sees a different side to Vincent that he doesn't share with anyone. As Vincent dealing with a broken home and with a brother in jail over being framed, Chloe and Vincent take it upon themselves to solve the mystery. Everything will lead to a shocking conclusion to to what really happened to Vincent's brother and a bittersweet ending for the Barlow sisters!I know I say this after every book that I read by Jordan Ford but this series has to be my favorite by her so far! I loved the fact that each one of the books had each sisters point of view when things were happening throughout the series, it just made the story come to life even more than ever! I always felt Chloe's story was gonna to be explosive for who she has chosen to love but that ending brings everything full circle with the events that had happened in Curveball to Foul Play! I also loved the true ending with what their futures are like just a year after everything had happened, it truly was the icing on the cake!Thank You to Jordan Ford for writing yet another ending to a fantastic series!!I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the Author!
