I have a mathematics background along with an undergrad degree in business, so you understand I am not financially illiterate. This is the WORST financial text I've ever seen. The examples are often unclear, there is no in-depth explanation of key concepts. As other reviewers have noted, I learned more from YouTube and the rest of the internet. The examples that ARE provided are not step-by-step, detailed, or explanatory. They are straightforward, you figure out where the numbers came from, so the "examples" are more accurately described as additional problems with answer provided. You must reverse engineer and discover for yourself from where data was gleaned. It is literally the least understandable and followable text I've ever had (3 schools, Bachelor, 2 Masters)! These outdated editions exist and still are used apparently because nothing significant is changed in new editions except the price (according to other reviews and research). I would avoid this text like the plague and do the same for a course requiring it, if possible.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is a jumble. I can't find my way through chapters logically, let alone see the logical flow of the book as a whole. It claims to have electronic links to things like spreadsheets and videos...it does not. All the links are dead. The publisher's website promises tons of content, and there's virtually nothing, and what is there is just fluff, not of any real use.And finally, the book is not updated in any meaningful way since the 8th edition (I compared it in the library). Literally all they did was tweak the number in the problem section so you don't get the same answers. Every word of the text is verbatim, except for some very minor changes (they refer to different baseball players' salaries, or sales of expensive art auction items). So they published a "new" edition not cause there's new information, or to update the content in keeping with the 2008-present recession, or anything else of academic merit. The changes are basically cosmetic, in order to sell more books. Putting out a new edition was not just unnecessary, it was evil.As for the Kindle execution...first, no page numbers. All books of this sort need literal page numbers, so that kindle users can follow along with the rest of the class. then, they only let you use it on two devices. One of the beauties of Kindle books is that you can bounce from device to device; your phone, your iPad, your laptop, your desktop and home and work, your Kindle, the new Kindle you had to buy because the old one got stolen, the new Kindle you bought because the newer models just came out...you get my drift. NOT with this book! You're limited to two devices. TWO! Utterly ridiculous.In sum, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you have to, plead to get a used copy of the 8th edition, you'll learn every bit as much. What might be missing can be found on the web. Teachers...if you must assign it to students, at least have the courtesy to let students us an older edition, since the 8th is exactly the same book.

Pray, pray, pray that your professor doesn't select this book. My main issue is that each chapter has a series of problems to test you on the concepts found in that chapter. However, the book only provides you with a few answers to these problems. For example, in my current chapter, there are 38 end of chapter problems. Answers to only 6 of them are provided in the answer key. Spend 40 minutes working out the answer to problem 15? Great, you have NO idea whether you got it right because it's not one of the 6 answers provided. I have spent a lot of time dealing with McGraw-Hill on whether a solutions key actually exists and even they're not sure.Also, be forewarned if your professor is using Connect for this textbook because it will be a waste of your money to buy it used or rent as you'll need to purchase a seperate access key to Connect and you get the text in e form with the Connect key. Don't pay for it twice like I had to.

Purchased because it sounded like it came with Connect access. It does not. Without Connect, the book was no use to me so I had to return and purchase elsewhere.

Not my kinda textbook. In talking to my instructor, it seems that this book is the gold standard for intro finance texts, and if that's the case, it's too bad. I didn't feel I learned much from it. Almost zero worked problems within the chapters, yet they toss you into the deep end at the end of the chapter with the problem sets.Personally, I learn a lot by studying and working through examples and seeing worked-problem solutions. They provide some example problemshere and there but they're usually on the order of "you should check our answers for practice." Well, what if your answers are wrong?! I should add, the supplemental materials of the text are not very helpful (powerpoint slides/lecture outlines.) Just read the text, work whatever assigned problems your instructor gives you, and hope for the best on the tests. Thankfully our professor just gave multiple choice open-book tests so everyone got an A or B on every test.It is a pretty basic text. The authors explain things ok usually, but their writing style is borderline archaic and they often take the long route in explaining important concepts. Their discussion of bond pricing and TVM (time value of money) needs improvement. So does their discussion of present value of dividends, in which they take a very loopy numerical approach that is far too hard to understand - I got most of the test questions wrong on this topic. They also refer to Sarbanes-Oxley as "Sarbox" - nobody else calls it anything except SOX. I took Intermediate Accounting before I took Finance, and we used the Kieso, et al. textbook, which was pretty darned difficult but better than this text as far as explanations of TVM and other topics.I am alarmed to see that a new copy of this book sold for over $200. It has over 20 chapters but they are all short and the information within this book is definitely not worth such a high pricetag. Actually, I rented this book for the course because the cost was far more than I was willing to pay.

For someone wishing to get a good look at what the art work was like in the Celtic world, this book does the trick. Lots of interesting details and the colors are fantastic. I would have enjoyed more commentary for the specific art works.

This was a really great book to give insight and visual pictures of what the peoples of the past did, owned and used. The pictures are incredibly vivid and clear. I would have liked a bit more history and explanation of the symbolism...just to add to my understanding...perhaps that is another book.

An amazing work of art! The poets are well matched with the art they chose and the poems are good enough to give you chills. A must for any serious collector of contemporary poetry.

Let me quickly write a disclaimer that I only purchased this book to use as a required book for my daughters' course on the 20th century this coming year. I had expected a longer book covering more poetry of the 2oth century. The book does have a number of artists represented, but I would not plan to spend $13 for the book again.

This is a great book for artists and non artists alike. It is a useful tool for any age group in understanding visual imagery. The poetry is done in response to art that ranges in style and media, giving the reader/viewer a wide exposure to the arts.The poerty is crisp, interesting and meaningful to contemporary culture without being trite or overly stylized.This book is a great educational resource, coffee table book, or good cure for the common boredom!

Beautiful poetry book, wonderful selections for my third and fourth graders.

Bought this book because it was part of the Sonlight 300 curriculum. Because it reflects poetry from the 20th century it rarely rhymes which can be hard to get used to. But, it does have a picture for every poem, most of which are color and relate to the poem. The pictures are all from the 20th century so your study of Modern American History can be that much more complete.

This three inch book of 650 pages is printed in what - to my tired old eyes - seems to be an eight point font, or less, and I struggled to read the closely packed history at first. But I persevered, gradually focusing on the facts and not the font, and found the extra effort well rewarded. In fact, by the second day, I could not put this impressive magnum opus down. The Boer War (1899 - 1902) was to be the most costly, in terms of blood and treasure, in the hundred years of Queen Victoria's "little wars" period, and was a true forecast of the butchery that smokeless rifles fired from trenches would effect in the slaughter of WWI.Thomas Pakenham is in fact the 8th Earl of Longford, and his grandfather fought the Boers in South Africa, and was seriously wounded in a typical `last stand' affair where 80 of his fellow troops were killed. The author, besides being a respected and prize winning historian (perhaps best known for his The Scramble for Africa is also a noted arborist.The book offers great insights - several of which are detailed here for the first time- into the politics of the war, both in Cape Town and the government parliaments and leaders, that were behind the campaigns and battles. A drum roll of famous characters thunders through this work, Kitchener, Roberts ("Bobs"), Kipling, Botha, Jan Smuts, Chamberlain ... names that echo still.I thoroughly recommend this book for history lovers and for those seeking the widest picture of a complicated, tortuous and very political war - A.J.P. Taylor added to his recommend that "...the reader turns each page with increasing fascination and admiration". I certainly did.

Thomas Pakenham, the brother of historian Antonia Fraser, penned "The Boer War" in the early 1970s. He was privileged to have available a trusty tape recorder and the reedy voices of several of the Tommy Atkins Brits who actually foght in the war! The Boer War lasted from 1899-1902. Its purpose was to conquer the Boer republics of the Orange Free State (cattle and sheep farmers) and Transvaal home to the world's richest gold mines. One war had been fought in the early 1880s won by Britain leading to their conquering of the Natal region. The British government's headquarters were in Capetown in the Cape colony. The Jameson raid in 1895 launched by the British against the Transvaal had failed. Now in 1899 the second Boer war began. Its author was Sir Arthur Milner High Commissioner to the Cape Colony. This bold imperialist wanted all of Africa to be British on his own terms. His opponent was the President of the Transvall the aged Paul Kruger. The Conservative government in London backed Milner in his plans. PM Salisbury wanted to seize South Africa for its rich gold lode and to ensure it would be secure as a fueling stop on the voyage around Africa to India the jewel in the British empire. The war was noted for its long sieges in which British civilians and soldiers were beseiged by Boers. The major sieges were at Mafeking and Ladysmith. The Boers were a tough opponent believing in guerilla warfare led by such fierce warriors as Jan Smuts and De Wet. The war dragged on feeding into its bloody maw over 22,000 British dead matched by an equal number of the Boers. Blacks were also killed in the thousands. Both the Boers and British were anti-black treating these people with great cruelty.Among the reasons for folks on this side of the pond to study the Boer War are the following:a. Lord Kitchener's widespread use of the concentration camp system to hold Boer women, children and POW's would be a harbinger of the horrors of twentieth century concentration camps in World War II and in the Soviet Gulag.b. The time of the cavalry horse was ending as defensive warfare (seen in its most salient focus in World War I) would come to the fore.c. The war was one of the costliest in English history. It reminds Americans of our long ordeals in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq.d. Men like the Commander Lord Roberts failed to properly administer hospitals, organize transport for his troops and failed to see that warfare was changing in the modern age.e. The war was the introduction to combat of such British luminaries of World War I as John French, HH. Kitchener and Douglas Haig.f. The war gave Winston Churchill his first fame. Churchill had been held in Praetoria as a captive of the Boers; he returned home to write a bestseller about his adventures winning him a seat in the British House of Commons. Great Britain proved victorious due to over 250,000 troops committed to the grisly campaign. The Orange Free State and Transvaal became possessions of the British Empire. This book is the sine qua non of literature on the Boer War. It is 615 densely written pages which will not whet the appetite of everyone. If you like detailed accounts of battles and a backstairs look at diplomacy this book will gratify your interest.

This is hands down the best Historical research on the Boer war. it is free of the common revisionism and PC found in most contemporary histories of The Second Boer War/Anglo-Boer War. Pakenham shows both sides of the conflict and the reason behind it, without the nonsense so common in modern revisions. I must warn you, this book is laden with all sorts of minutia and details leading up to the war. Politics, Capitalism, and power abuse are all shown and how they led to this conflict and in great detail. Also has a good selection of pictures.

Good book. Tough men.

This textbook is considered the latest, the greatest, state-of-the-art, and is used by Harvard. It is worth every minute you spend reading it. However, some of the later chapters can be confusing regarding the use of various cost models when describing aircraft and coffee makers within the same chapter as examples. The chapter on lean manufacturing is oversimplified. This book should be supplemented by a lean-manager program if proper understanding of lean is warranted. The reading level is advanced, and if one finds the text difficult to read then that one should take a course in English grammar, first.

The book was as good as expected. It takes time and effort to work through the exercises. A lot of the problems at the end of each chapter were hard to figure out because there are just not enough examples to guide you. In general, the book is a good source of reference when you work with either governmental or non-for-profit accounting.

It's not the most interesting book in the world (mainly due to the topic), but it presented the material well enough to give the reader a solid understanding of the subject matter. The book is priced reasonably compared to many other textbooks.

The book is very good except some one smoke when they read it or it store in a smokey place.strong smell!

This book is very indepth and not for someone that is not detail oriented and doesn't already have a strong knowledge of accounting transactions. Also the text covers more about government accounting than Not-For-Profit.
