I read a lot of books on religion and how to understand God's words -- the Bible. I found this book to be simple, but encouraging. It was a quick read with each chapter being just long enough to serve as a reading for a devotional time -- when we devote time to spending with God. The book's advice and insight brought me to a better understanding regarding how God answers prayers and we have to be as we wait God to answer prayer. I gave it five stars, because it is a comforting book I felt the last chapter, while a good wrapup for the book, could have had a little more to the ending. But overall, it was a very good read.

The book is a good starting point to the question asked; however, the exploration is only at the preliminary stages. This, though, does make it an easy read. The best parts of the book were the excellent stories that amplified the point of Holy Scripture and the author.

I have now reviewed about ten books on middle school study skills, and there are others better than this one.This book is divided into three parts: (1) getting it together, (2) What's my grade?, and (3) learning to learn. Much of the book is direct at the teacher, who is urged to micro-plan his or her classroom experience, e.g., have pencil, pen, and paper, use homework helpers, getting set up for class, having a place to study, and so forth. Ernst then writes about grading systems (not sure what that has to do with study skills), and then, finally, addresses some specific study skills. The suggestions in the section "Reading This and That" seemed fairly elementary to me, and were not, in fact, process skills that students could use.I found Laurie Rozakis' book Super Study Skills to be more useful in this age group. William Luckie's book Study Power is more useful in the high school and early college age group.

One who desires nothing more than the simple submission of my soul to sit on his lap and have him wrap arms around me. When I hold my own grandchildren on my lap and do nothing but squeeze them tightly and whisper "I love you no matter what" in their childish ears, I finally understand who I am as a child and what I am here to do for my family and all those with whom I come in contact.I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has been disappointed by religion, by their false image of God, and by their false image of themselves. It is a book for anyone who is suffering from the addiction to busyness and performance that I've personally endured, to "other pleasing", and of course to those who search for their self meaning in substances that give only temporary relief from the reality of their personal loss of esteem and purpose.Powerful, personal, genuine in its message of hope! I hope this gentle healer named Richard never puts down his pen!

Anyone who thinks this is a book about addiction has missed the point -- or just finds it easier to fix other people's addictions than confront their own brokenness. Richard Rohr has brilliantly introduced 12-step spirituality as a lens through which we can identify our "holes in the soul" and move into more authentic relationships with ourselves and with our Lord.

This is an amazing book for those on a spiritual path, particularly through the Twelve Steps, who struggle to find the God of Their Understanding"/Higher Power in the religious teachings and experiences they've encountered in life. Rohr helps bring reconciliation by humbly but clearly calling the church and "Christians" out when they have lost sight of or just plain missed the point of what Jesus was trying to teach. A fascinating read that helped me see the beauty of the forest and pity the ugliness of some very visible trees. I think any lapsed Christian who has resentments towards religion would find healing in these pages. And any die hard atheists and agnostics can see the words of Jesus in a way that he can be appreciated as a brilliant philosopher. Jesus without Christianity! Awesome and helpful.

This is the first Richard Rohr book that I read & have been hooked on his writings. It goes in depth to each of the AA 12 step program from both a religious & Humanist standpoint. It is not focused just on alcohol & drug abuse, but on the many varied addictions that we all have. I like it so much that I then took a 12 week online course that Fr. Rohr had offered on this book.

This excellent book gives good insight into why the Twelve Step program, initially developed for alcohols and subsequently applied to other addictions, has been so helpful to so many people. The twelve Step program is not theology, nor is it philosophy, but it is methodology that leads to a spiritual awakening and a new way of relating to God (Higher Power) and to other men and women.

In all honesty I have not read the book in its entirety and I probably won't. What I have read is a bit disjointed and I have great difficulty with the way he words things. Sometimes its as thought he doesn't believe in an omni-God who is Transcendent at all and almost reads like secular humanism...we are our own salvation. Were he more clear, I don't think this we be my understanding (I have read Rohr before). Nothing wrong with immanent God, but God is both immanent and transcendent to my mind. Having read much of Rohr's other work this certainly falls way short! Best books by Richard Rohr include Hope Against Darkenss, and Things Hidden.

Tbis is a beautiful treatise on rhe theology of the 12 Steps from the point of view of a Christian minister. I certainly don't agree with all of his premises, but he points out how the Steps are very similar to the poinrs made in both the Old and New Testaments. He talks about a transformative, compassionate ministry based on compassion and giving to others. This transformative ministry goes beyond piety and religious fervor and points out that compassion for others, not judgemental harangues and finger~pointing, is truly Christian. Suffering brimgs people together to help others because one sufferer truly understands and can help another one. This book can help church members transform themselves and their churches to be more in line with the truly radical idea of loving one another.

We are all addicted to something. We all, even the "best" of us, tend to chase after small-g gods instead of the One, trying to fill/soothe/meet all the emptiness, loneliness & brokenness...and numb the pain that comes with being human. Usually "something" happens to wake us up and help us realize we are prisoners unto ourselves, our own wills - usually a greater grief or pain, sometimes extreme joy - but that's just the first step. This slim book, with an economy of words and a lot of great insight, ideas and merciful, humble encouragement (several times I was delighted by a new way to think of things), helps you keep walking.

There is quite a bit to like about this book. The author provides some very interesting insights about what she believes famous economists of the past would have thought about current policy issues. For me her two best chapters were the ones on Adam Smith (where she offers some great insights about Smith's view of the role of government) and on Irving Fisher (she focuses on his theory of business cycles).Some of her other chapters offer fewer insights, however, and she too often takes a leftish slant on current issues. In that regard, her chapter on Milton Friedman is one of her weakest. She also appears not to have heard of any modern economists other than Paul Krugman or Joe Stiglitz. Still, a fascinating read that even someone with a pretty good grasp of the history of economics can learn from.

It’s a book and subjective

This is an interesting book for the layman who have heard about famous economists but have little idea why they are famous. Adam Smith, John Maynard Keynes, Karl Marx, and Frederich Hayek are the most prominent ones. In just under 300 pages, Linda Yueh includes David Ricardo, Joan Robinson, Joseph Schumpeter, Irving Fisher, Milton Friedman, Alfred Marshall and Douglass North – and has a cameo appearance of Paul Samuelson. Yueh provides a short but captivating personal biography of each of these economists and explains lucidly what mad these men famous. What is the important aspect of this book? It addresses the problems that we see almost daily in the news media about trade war and verbal war among major politicians. Yueh says: ‘Brexit and Trumpism are among the most prominent political expressions of discontent with the status quo. Globalization’s unequal impact, creating winners and losers, is part of the status quo. But there are other factors, such as robotics and automation, at play too.’ Yueh discusses the problems of rising inequality and explains how it has risen. She discusses the opposing views as to what should be done. Should there be a redistribution of wealth through taxation, which requires government intervention (Keynes), and those who oppose government intervention (Hayek). The reader will better understand that Marxism is not identical with communism but they share major ideals, the main one being their strong opposition to capitalism, yet ironically, there are many who believe that Marxism might well be the way to save capitalism from itself. The great economists discussed in this book had all ‘engaged in the policy debates of the day’. Yueh tries to link the ways these economists are similar, and the main one, as she says, is that they ‘formulated general models to tackle the biggest economic challenges’. They are also prescient in many instances. Hayek, for instance wrote ‘The Denationalization of Money’ to inspire private companies rather government to issue money. He was of the view that the competition in the private sector would lead to stability of the currencies. Are we seeing this come to pass in the rise of cryptocurrencies? Should the politicians and policy makers take heed? How many of them have an understanding of economics that include a knowledge of the life and intentions of the great economists? Perhaps they should read this book.

This is another economist pushing for infinite growth on a finite planet. She happens to start with the beginning of fossil fuels, Adam Smith, through the peak of fossil fuels, Solow. It was coal that allowed UK to punch above its weight. The insights for the fossil fuel era may not apply to the next era.The epilogue concerns globalization. Globalization is an ecological disaster. Adam Smith never envisioned the movement of capital on this scale. In the past there was the danger of local collapse, now the scale is potentially global. Every economics paper should have an ecological co-author. Or take a weekend course in ecology. You have to control your borders, especially when the North Sea oil is in decline.Where is Jevons?But there are some good bits.

Rather than presenting her own prescriptions for what she believes ails modern society, the author cleverly attempts to channel 12 prominent economists on these topics. The historical background for the questions discussed is valuable, in my opinion. A couple of irritations: (1) the author is overly preoccupied with the Nobel Prize as an indication of merit. 99.9999% of economists will not receive a Nobel, so this preoccupation seems a bit odd; and (2) the author's blind worship of economic growth is remarkable, considering that numerous environmental sensors are flashing warnings that already realized past economic growth is killing this planet. The next truly great economist will supply a path forward where multi-generational worldwide deflation / reduction in economic activity nevertheless manages to optimize the health and well-being of all creatures on this plant. Bring it on!

His dedication to his craft shows, much as Lindon's own dedication finally is leading to some significant progress in this book. I won't spoil any details, but for those of you who have been eagerly waiting for Lindon to get more powerful...Beyond that, Eithan is always a delight, his casual exterior a brilliant obfuscation for his continuous manipulation of both friends and foes to his whims.Yerin has always been my favorite character in this series, and I'm pleased that she gets more character progression of her own here with a bit of a side-arc. Not enough to derail the main plot, but we get some more intriguing hints about her background here.I haven't been a big fan of Suriel in the past, but I'll say that Suriel's part in this book is the most interesting it's ever been, and I'm sincerely interested in seeing where that plot goes in the future.There are some epic fight scenes, but anyone who has read Will's book before knows to expect those. I wasn't expecting the sheer *number* of them, though. There are a lot of fight scenes - as well as training scenes - and I loved that. There was more learning how the magic system works, too, more explanations about the Blackflame empire and the wider world... More of everything I wanted to see, really.I'll be looking forward to Book 4.

I almost never give five star reviews. Look up my history if you don't believe me. This book passes muster and earns the fifth star.I just finished the third book. Two thoughts come to mind. One. How the heck can someone be so creative and expressive? Two. How the heck can he write such greatness so fast?Wight is a rare talent and I feel lucky to have discovered his works.The book? As always, if you liked the first two this one won't disappoint. If you are new to the author... give the first book in the series a try... and also give House of Blades a try.

I've been reading Will Wight since Travelers Gate, and it has been a joy to see the improvements in his prose. That being said, this book had me on the edge of my seat all day, and I finished it in one sitting instead of studying for finals. So don't pick it up if you have something that needs to be done today.

Blackflame is the third book in Will Wight’s “Cradle” series. This books opens with Lindon adopted into the mysterious Ethan’s clan. Ethan plans to train Lindon personally for his upcoming battle with a high gold that everyone knows Lindon cannot defeat. But Ethan has a plan. He wants to train Lindon (with the help of a sacred beast) in a branch of the sacred arts that has been extinct for decades – the path of the Blackflame. Does Lindon have the fortitude to endure the torturous training? Will he be ready to face the leader of the Ji clan in only a year?This book is my favorite of the first three in the series. Wight has grown the story significantly since that first book “Unsouled” and this one does the best job of developing Lindon’s character as we have the opportunity to watch him train on the course of the Blackflame. I enjoyed the building trust and familiarity between Lindon and Yerin as the spend every day together working towards perfecting their own sacred artist path. I also really enjoyed getting more information about Ethan and his backstory. This third book moves quickly and is over much too soon. I’m not sure how many books are planned for the series, but I hope Wight continues to turn them out quickly because I am eagerly waiting on the next one.For anyone who enjoyed the first two books, this is an absolute must read. It’s the best of the three by a wide margin. Very well done. A+

Blackflame is an incredible fusion of eastern and western ideas. In the third installment of Will Wight’s Cradle series it’s obvious that the author not only loves this world and the characters but is also comfortable enough with them to truly begin spreading his wings. Whether you are a fan of xianxia tales or a complete newbie to the subgenre, Blackflame will entertain you and make you love the characters Wight has crafted.By the time you get to a third book in a series things can begin to feel formulaic, or at least slightly stale. Wight largely manages to avoid those feelings. He does this by continuing to reveal more about the setting while continuing to offer intriguing mysteries. There is a lot going on in Blackflame from a worldbuilding perspective. It would be easy for this to feel overwhelming, yet somehow Wight ensures that it all feels authentic. As Lindon learns more about his world, Iteration 110 Cradle, we are learning right along with him. This keeps things feeling fresh, which is impressive. Lindon continues to be an underdog in this world, and you’d think that would be wearing thin as well, and yet Wight weaves his story with such skill that—far from wearing thin—it feels quite expected and real for Lindon to continue having the struggles he is having. Wight’s ability to interweave world building and fascinating, deep characters is second to none. Blackflame has world building depth that could give Brandon Sanderson or George R.R. Martin a run for their money, but it’s all packed into a quick read that is fast-paced with little to no down time. Not only is the world building impressive, Wight is really flexing his character muscles in this one, as we begin learning more about both Yerin and Eithan. Not only this, but Wight has given us an interesting, multi-faceted antagonist in Jai Long. All of these are wrapped up in a story that has more than a few twists in it.If any criticism can be offered for this book, it’s that it definitely feels like it’s part of a series. While the read was satisfying, it certainly didn’t have a self-contained plot, and plenty of threads are left hanging. It’s hardly fair to expect otherwise in a middle book, and yet I do think Wight might have been able to do a little more to give this book its own internal arc.If you enjoy hopeful fantasy with a blockbuster style, Blackflame will be right up your alley. It’s got all the items you’d expect in a Will Wight book, a fun magic system, deep characters, and complex world building all held together in an excellently paced story that keeps the pages turning. If you haven’t given Wight’s Cradle series a go yet, do yourself a favor and pick up the first book, Unsouled as soon as you can.4.6/5 stars.5 – I loved this, couldn’t put it down, move it to the top of your TBR pile4 – I really enjoyed this, add it to the TBR pile3 – It was ok, depending on your preferences it may be worth your time2 – I didn’t like this book, it has significant flaws and I can’t recommend it1 – I loathe this book with a most loathsome loathing
