I'm going to try to keep it short here. This book contains the many missing pieces I had tried to imagine in my mind after completely emersing myself in Randy Rhoads over 35 years ago. Rudy has brought me so much closer to life with Randy with the recollective thoroughness of his time they had spent together. Rudy's in-depth accounts of now legendary Ozzy tour dates is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for putting this book together Rudy. The music and memory of Randy will live on forever. This publication further solidifies that fact. A must read for any Ozzy/Randy era fan.

This is a fascinating look into the live touring band and related shenanigans of Ozzy's early solo days. It helped give me an even greater appreciation of the guitar legend Randy Rhoads. In addition, I gained a real affection for Rudy and Randy. It was like sitting with Rudy and having him share his memories from life on the road, with a few personal asides. I enjoyed the read.Sarzo never trashes Ozzy or Sharon, and he continually shows his gratitude for the opportunity to play in the band, but it's clear Ozzy was a disaster. Without Randy (not to mention guitar greats like Tony Iommi and Jake E. Lee) to carry him, Ozzy would not be the multimillionaire he is today. Rhoads, Sarzo and Tommy Alridge carried that band while Ozzy fumbled his way around, usually drunk. Interestingly, while Rudy defends Randy or the other musicians against any criticisms in the contemporaneous reviews he shares in the book, Sarzo is mostly silent when rock critics bash Ozzy's vocal performances and stage presence. You can watch the band live from 1981 (recorded for a TV show, and discussed in the book) and see for yourself how everyone is firing on all cylinders except for Ozzy. That's not even touching on Ozzy as a person, which is awful as well. From committing acts of domestic violence against Sharon to shitting in people's shoes, he comes off as a real scumbag. I know there are people who will just say that it's all rock and roll antics, but think about whether you would want someone like this in your life. Sarzo is a rock veteran and he still acts like a person who gives and deserves respect.Reading how Ozzy behaves in this book, as well as Sharon's mechanations, I absolutely believe the claims by guys like Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslacke, Jake Lee, etc, saying Ozzy had screwed them over financially. It makes me wonder how things would have played out with Randy and Ozzy if Rhoads hadn't passed away in a stupidly tragic accident.Where I knock a star off on my rating for the memoir is threefold: 1) there are grammatical errors that an editor should've fixed, 2) my Kindle version had some pretty sloppy formatting issues, and 3) the book moves forward in a pretty linear manner, with its lowest points having Rudy just rattle off tour dates. This book (and the Metal Blades bio written by Brian Slagel) helped me appreciate the value a ghost writer can add by really cleaning up a good story and making it great. Sarzo has a compelling book here, but it could've used some cleanup.I'd love to read more by Rudy, however. His career journey is quite fascinating, playing with amazing, talented people in outfits like Quiet Riot, M.A.R.S., Dio, etc.; There are more stories to tell, and I hope he shares them.

Thank you for telling your story, Rudy, and the insight into the Blizzard days and the inspirational, and sorely missed RR. I was in middle school during those days and was heavily influenced by RR, EVH, Angus, and Jimmy P. as a player. Randy's early passing had a great effect on many people, including myself, and it still bothers me to this day knowing all the new music we would never get to hear from him and ended up being denied of when he was unfortunately taken from us at such a young age. I also liked the mentions of all the other musicians you came across during those days that would later go on to other bands/fame and where/who they started out with. So, thanks again, Rudes, for taking the time to record and share with us your life during those days and giving us a first hand and coherent look into your friendship with Randy and the zany ride on the crazy train. It was a great read and a great tribute to him. Best to you and your family.

We should all have as good a friend as Rudy Sarzo. Talk about a memorial with heart. In writing about how great his friend and band mate, Randy Rhoads, was; Rudy's own greatness is revealed. I cannot recall the last time I've been so touched by a eulogy. As anyone who knows me, knows I'm a guitar freak. A metal head. Nothing makes my heart beat harder than the wail of a guitar and those who make the six strings obey and bend to their command. Rhoads was one of the very best. Ever. And it still kills me that he tragically died in an airplane crash at 26. Rudy is no slouch, himself, as a bassist. I like the fact that his love and admiration for Randy shows through on every page. I like that he didn't trash the Osbourne's. I like that he wears his heart on his sleeve, that he's humble, that he's cool enough to express his gratitude to God without sounding like a phony. This is a testimony from a great man and musician about another great man and musician for a brief and shining moment in the annals of eternity. And how blessed we all were to hear Randy Rhoads play guitar for a few years.

Okay, Sarzo is not a novelist. The awkward dialog is distracting at first, but either I got used to it, or he greatly improved during the course of writing. Maybe a bit of both. On the other hand, I ended up very pleased that this is told open and honestly, in his own voice, rather than through a polished ghost writer. We all have our perceptions of what touring with the wunderkind and the madman must have been like in the heyday of both their careers, and it was amazing to get such a thorough and candid accounting of the realities of those years. I wholeheartedly recommend that any fan of that music put on a copy of the Tribute album and give this book a read. If you don't identify with the personalities and tear up at least once, it's possible you're dead inside. Well done, Mr. Sarzo. Here's hoping we see a second volume about your subsequent years corrupting my ears.
