I’ve read all of Charlie N. Holmberg’s books. She is a captivating writer with a wonderful imagination. While Veins of Gold is not my favorite of her books, it’s still a very good read. The bad news first: The one thing that bothered me about this story is that there wasn’t quite enough of it. I would have loved to see more depth in all of the areas—more magic and more explanation of what and why; more romance and depth to the relationship between Gentry and Winn; the family issues and character interactions were good, but I just wanted more of them. That said, however, I did enjoy this story. It’s difficult for me to geek out about all the things I loved, without giving away spoilers. A good portion of the delight I found in this book came in watching things slowly unfold—and I don’t want to ruin that for anyone. The writing is stellar. Holmberg weaves setting, dialog, and action seamlessly. I really felt I was part of this story. I loved the play on words in the title. (That shows up once we get into the story a bit.)The characters of Gentry and her siblings were well-done. I also loved the “adopted” Mormon family and how they helped Gentry and her siblings. (There is no preaching in this book.) Winn was a little confusing, and I’d like to have seen more of him to understand him better.I thought the magic system was very imaginative—the power of the earth, gold, and the magic in animals. It was believable to me that this world of magic could have once existed, and I felt sad that it doesn’t anymore.I think the thing I loved most was Gentry’s journey to understand the earth magic. I loved Winn’s seagulls and his method of travel. And I love the way Gentry was able to bring resolution to Winn’s childhood trauma. There are a couple of mild swear words. There is the violence of natural disaster, the effects of poverty, and a few punches, but it’s not bad. The romance is very clean.I recommend Veins of Gold to readers, age 14+. Also to readers who like mixed-genres, or are already Charlie N. Holmberg fans. I give it 4.5 STARS.

I loved the Paper Magician series. I loved Followed by Frost. I have enjoyed many Charlie Holmberg books, but this book was not one that I loved. Her writing is fluent and engaging in all of her books, including this one. I just did not like the story that she told. I purchased the book because I have enjoyed those other books, and because the beginning was strong. (I read the beginning with the Look Inside feature on Amazon’s website.) Unfortunately, the magic is strange, the setting jumps around, lots of things make no sense, and the resolution is not satisfying at all. If you love Charlie Holmberg, you may read this anyway. If you have never read anything by Charlie Holmberg, don’t start with this book because you might end up skipping some very entertaining stories.

Just not much here. I feel like this might have made an okay short story but got stretched into a poor novel. Sucks because I really liked the Paper Magician trilogy and now I’m worried that I just love the Paper Magician world and not the author. There just wasn’t much of a story. Wasn’t much world building. Wasn’t much character development other than a hair in the protagonist. Plot points that went nowhere. Vaguely unsatisfactory resolution to plot points.I went back and forth between two and three stars but in the end I honestly disliked it which sucks because how much I love her other work.

This book is set in an alternative version of the early days of Utah's history with many places and stories that were familiar to me. I loved the way Ms Holmberg added magic to that history. Gentry and Winn were complex but united in caring for the people around them and it was great to see the chemistry between them. Gentry's brother and sister were great supportive characters as was the magic.I loved this story and the way it made magic seem possible in our world while it was also a love story.I received a free copy for review but I enjoyed it enough to also purchase a copy for my library.

I really wanted to love this, but I just thought it was strange. I enjoyed the unfolding struggles of a homesteading family of kids abandoned by their father. I enjoyed seeing them working together to survive. I honestly think that story alone was compelling enough without the weird magic. The magic was just too strange. It didn't make sense how it worked within the context of the story. It really isn't explained how Winn or Gentry are suddenly able to wield magic, but no-one else can see what they see or do what they do. Then there are the magical flying bird and beetle houses - just nonsensical. I liked all of the characters, but I think I would have liked this better as a straight forward pioneer story without the magic. If you want to read something by this author that works better, try Followed By Frost or the Paper Magician series.

As her writing matures and finds its center, Charlie Holmberg puts a quiet, gentle energy and even more finished touch to this story of early California Gold Rush days. Her understanding of the Mormon culture and love for native American and indigenous culture gives a full rendition of early pioneer life in the Utah desert. This story is less "emotional" than some in the Young Adult genre, not the heaving bosom kind of emotion, anyway, but more a quiet seething, as a young woman is required to grow up very fast after tragedy. Her spirit is strained to the breaking point when she tries to be logical in her decisions, so it's a relief to all when she learns to follow her heart to the life she is meant to live.I enjoyed this book as much or more than the previous ones. It was the right story for the right time.
