A new generation of Jews is rising, one that values traditional Judaism in its wholeness, and wants to be specifically Jewish. One that loves the Jewish state of Israel and wants to see it survive and flourish; one that values religious freedom, and one that sees how mistaken is the slanted, narrow and self-destructive definition of "tikkun olam" imposed on Judaism by a corrupt and gradually dying left-wing American Jewish establishment. Thank you, Jonathan Neumann, for writing our generation's call to truth.Tikkun olam traditionally meant making the world holy by carefully observing all of the mitzvot, the commandments of the Torah. Now, the term has been re-worked by the American Jewish establishment to refer primarily to left-wing political activism. This, we are told by them, is the essence of Judaism. That is an ignorant and superficial understanding of Judaism, and ultimately a poisonous one. It is no coincidence that the leftward turn of the American Jewish establishment has been concurrent with the unprecedented withering and attrition of the American liberal Jewish denominations. They have "progressed" on out of Judaism. Why join a congregation, why even be Jewish when you can fulfill the essence of Judaism by voting Democrat and supporting progressive causes? Liberal Jews: that is the question your children are asking themselves.

"To Heal the World" is a detailed analysis of how most American Jews, aided and abetted by the Reform and Conservative movements, have abandoned traditional Jewish thinking (and of course, practice) and replaced it with a relatively minor concept in the Jewish tradition known as Tikkun Olam, which means to repair or heal the world. The Tikkun Olam "program," as (mis)interpreted and promulgated by its enthusiasts, is in near perfect alignment with what in the secular world is known as the Social Justice movement and it's hard-left agenda. Unfortunately, many Jews have fallen for Tikkun Olam without having a clue as to what it's all about, or even what their tradition is all about, which is no surprise given that they are being influenced by the many non-Orthodox Jewish religious leaders and writers who are so busy peddling T-O's revisionist theology that they themselves seem to have no time for genuine Jewish learning and thinking.The author does an excellent job of showing how many Biblical texts have been re-interpreted to fit T-O theology, so much so that their new meanings grossly distort or even totally contradict traditional Jewish teachings. The result is that under T-O, Judaism, a 3,000 year old religion, is being replaced by a political movement - leftism. Those who have fallen under the sway of T-O naturally feel that they're doing G-d's will, but these people don't know a mitzvah from a matzah.This is a painful subject and the author should be congratulated for tackling it head on. Anyone who is concerned about how and why authentic Judaism is being hijacked by a political agenda should read this book.

Important thought provoking book that needed to be written 30 years ago and is surely needed today. Jews need to know that Tikun Olam has been hijacked by a political movement that does not promote Judaism and Jewish interests. This movement has shown that it is not favorable to a Jewish Israel. Contrary to popular belief, Tikun Olam is not a Jewish concept. This means that partaking in Tikun Olam should not be seen as fulfilling a Jewish value. And this needs to be understood. Far too many say that they feel Jewish because of their participation in what they have been brainwashed into thinking is Tikun Olam. These same Jews need to understand the damage they are also causing. Buy the book and start the conversation and debate in your own home.

The author makes a convincing case that the social justice movement which now infests the contemporary American Reform movement and to a lesser extent other denominations is simply a sham and has no basis whatsoever in Jewish writings or past practices. He takes each of the supposed underpinnings and then reveals them for what they are, fabrications.In contrast, he sees the Classical Reform movement as authentic and honest about what it was, something completely new and largely untethered to the past. Ultimately this lack of historical grounding was unsatisfying leading to the need for the Reform leaders of today to backfill and rationalize their non-Jewish statist and far left ideologies with reimagined ties to Jewish writings and traditions. It reminds me of Justice Douglas and his penumbras in Griswold where the result may or may not be to your tastes but his corrupt reasoning left the process of judicial review in disarray.The author's well constructed critique makes it clear that repairing the whole world is not a legitimate central tenet of Judaism. Unfortunately, it does not tell us how to repair the Jewish world ripped apart by the social justice warriors.One possible criticism of Neumann is that he perhaps overstates the power of the social justice movement within Reform Judaism, at least for now. Not all the lay leaders and rabbis have fallen down the social justice rabbit hole and neither have their congregants. For some, social justice is not the dominant factor in their faith nor will it ever be. While the current state of affairs is dreadful, it could change for the better as more people become familiar with the arguments Neumann raises.

I am still in the process of reading this book. However, from what I read so far, it has been eye opening and very informative. Mr. Neumann does a superb job of providing you dense information in an easy to read format.If the subject of "tikun olam" interest you, this should be on your must read list.Kol HaKavod (Great Job) Mr. Neumann!

This is a wonderful book!!! It teaches children basic Chinese, cultures and customs. I love the cute illustrations on each page. I think it is important to teach children about different cultures and let them embrace all our differences. This book brings up wonderful memories for when I was a child and the customs my family did for my sister and I growing up. I would highly recommend getting this book and reading it with your child!

There's hardly anything to read to your child. The content is very on the surface, stereotypical "Taiwanese" topics.

Fun informative book before a first trip to Taiwan. Recommend.

With so many children's books on the market, I found it refreshing to find a book that actually expands my son's world perspective and explores the concept of other cultures, languages, people and customs. I appreciated the Chinese characters and their English pronunciation, as well as the thoughtful details about what makes Taiwan unique. My son actually learned a few common Chinese words that he now enjoys repeating. This book is easy to read, fun, engaging and opens my son to so many interesting things. I'm very happy with my purchase and highly recommend this book.

My kids received this book as a gift and loved it so I bought another one to give to my daughter's teacher. It has great illustrations and exposes them to interesting cultural nuggets about Taiwan. I'm eagerly waiting for the next one!

Great story, love the illustrations. The writer has a good understanding of what will interest kids and how to keep the reader entertained. The characters are likable and my kids love putting themselves in the place of the kids in the book. I love how they are learning to appreciate a culture they otherwise might not have exposure to. This is a great introduction to Taiwan, travel, new adventures, family connections... I bought two, one for us to keep at home one we donated to our elementary school's library. I recommend everyone else do the same! With all the fluff books out there, it is nice to have a book like this that is well written, fun to read and informative.

This book is a great way to introduce your kids to other cultures or to help your kids have an Asian role model.

Part of the problem is that I am not sure where to start. Scott Martin's book helped take some of the mystery out of marketing for me. It is an easy read, chocked full of ideas on what to do to earn some $ and how to do it.He literally goes down the list of 103 different ways that the reader can turn their writing skills into a steady income flow. Is it easy to do? NO, of course not. But it can be done and has been and will again by those folks who know how to start and are able to follow through. Each of the 103 sections explains a bit about the method, how to break into the field, what you can expect to earn, some have sections called Street Smart Advice and some list the top job boards for that field. Plenty of links to other sites and places that offer positions or seek people with writing skills.You can breeze through the book quickly and skip the sections that you have no aptitude in. I liked the business oriented stuff like Chapter 44-Writing for Ebay, 48-Non-fiction writer, 75-Corporate histories writer and 99-Business Appraiser. The first chapter about blog writing was a real eye opener as well and is something anyone could start doing immediately. I skipped the music-oriented chapters because I can barely play the radio or recognize a musical instrument when I see one so not every chapter helped me. But I found the ones that did and those made the book well worth the price. If you need some help getting ideas and marketing yourself, this is a keeper.

I was amazed at just how many opportunities there are to make money as a professional writer. This book has definitely ignited my passion for writing and pursuing a freelance career. There were numerous creative opportunities that I had never considered. Each writing opportunity includes helpful information on how to break into the field, what you can expect to earn, and insider tips. This is an excellent resource that I will continue to refer to.

I have been freelance writing for several years, but this book opened my mind to unexplored options and avenues of potential income. I love the "Street Smarts" sections and action points. The title is well written and the information highly actionable. Ok, I admit it...I am a struggling author and while I have a couple of books on Amazon, I am far from making a living off of my craft. Mr. Martin has created a mammoth compendium of outlets to write for including a few dozen I would never have considered.This is not a rosy, Pollyanna approach to writing. Mr. Martin takes each of the 103 writing fields and points out the strengths and challenges to each, how much one might earn and how and where to look for more detailed information on breaking into each.For my part, I had never even thought about most of these and the list is brilliant!! This is the bargain of the week and required reading for anyone seriously considering trying to make a few extra dollars to someone seeking a Full Time serious income. I'm 38 and I want to get my MBA, but I didn't take Calc in undergrad and the school I want to attend requires Calc as a prerequisite. I took precalc in undergrad but just didn't get around to Calc I because it wasn't required for my major. So, I'm "the old guy" in my Calc class. After the first dayy of class, I was genuinely concerned that I'd fail and, as a result, not be able to do the MBA program. So much algebra and trig! Serious high school math. Thankfully, I noticed an ad for Just-In-Time Algebra and Trig in the front of my Calc book. I ordered the book from Amazon, did the first several chapters right away and then did a few more chapters here and there over the next few weeks. I just had my first Calc exam last week and guess what? I got a low A on the exam. And I thought I was going to fail!If my story sounds anything like yours, just get the book and do the work. Good luck!

Worth it. Just a couple of the concepts in this book that I had forgotten (and the skill-building exercises associated with them) made Calc 2 seem possible for me.
