This book is soaked in wisdom and healing truths!!! Josefina puts her heart on paper as she bears her soul and opens up about the miscarriage of her precious baby. She captures the reader within the introduction and invites you alongside her as she walks through the stages of grief. I appreciate Josefina’s transparency about the deep hurt she experienced as well as her honesty about where she is in her journey presently. One of the sweetest things I truly loved about her book is that she additionally invites the reader to journal along through our own grief as she opens up about her own. It is captivating! It is healing! Most importantly, it is REAL and I have truly been blessed it!!! I recommend this to anyone and everyone as we have all experienced some form of loss and need the precious reminder this gem of a book offers in that we are not alone!

There is so much I can say about this beautiful work, from the honest poems to the elegant illustration it has all been positively impacting.Even though I have not experienced the kind of loss that is discussed in the book the author’s words and drawn images still spoke to my heart. I was somehow able to be inspired by the truth that she shares in the text as well as use the steps mentioned to work on areas of my heart that need healing.Although I think that the author inteded it to be a book to help mothers through their miscarriages, it truly helps with that and more. And I appreciate how the author doesn’t tell you what to do to feel better, instead her writing is as if she is walking alongside you, sharing in the pain & saying, “I understand”. Which is sometimes all you need. Its a great book! I hope millions of people get their hands on it- it truly is a gem.

A powerful book of grief, hope, and healing. It puts a voice to your hurt and yet points you towards the sweet grace of God by someone who has really experienced it.

Incredible. Healing. I sobbed the whole way through. A must-read, especially for mamas with empty arms.

I feel less alone after reading the book, makes me feel understood.

The mourning sister has truly captured a heart going through miscarriage and the pain after while refreshing the soul at the same time.

A book everyone can read and find a connection to...this is a powerful collection of thoughts and feelings. The author works through various stages of grief and helps us realize that it’s okay to hurt. This book is truly special and a work of art.

How to Start a Worm Bin is well-written and accessible. With Henry Owen’s clear guidance, I set up a good bin in the best location and filled it with the proper mix of bedding. I was then able to quickly identify a reputable place to buy my first batch of red wigglers. Once my worms arrived, the book helped me detect the signs of over-feeding; how to maintain a balanced moisture level; and, offered specific and comprehensive tips for regular maintenance to ensure a healthy wormery. The appendices are organized for quick reference, including a FAQ section and trouble-shooting chart. My wormery is thriving! The section “Worm Composting for Kids” inspired me to invite my granddaughter to share in the experience and to gain her first scientific and ecological insights. An added bonus is the author's generosity in providing ongoing electronic links and information to those who buy the book.I highly recommend this guide to those interested in a responsible and fascinating route to making a positive, environmental impact and achieving nutrient-rich compost to boot.Owen's guide is well organized and clear, with each chapter addressing a specific component of running a good womery, addressing fully fears and concerns beginners unavoidably face, maintenance tips that assure a continued healthy bin, and even suggestions for inviting children into the worm composting experience!I definitely recommend this book to anyone considering worm composting.

There are quite a few guides to worm composting but most of them repeat essentially the same information with slight variations in the way they suggest building your bin or which one to purchase among the commercial ones. What sets this book apart and makes it the best of those I have looked at is that it discusses each aspect of worm composting in the most practical way without much in the way of dogma. Instead the author discusses real life experience, much of it his own, explaining the reasons for various choices and leaving you with a good number of options in each area so that you can take advantage of bedding options that are inexpensively and readily available for you or food options that are likewise practical for each reader. I had it on hand when I began worm composting and it gave me all the information I needed to feel rightfully confident in being successful. Highly recommended.

Henry Owen does an excellent job of emphasizing the important aspects of vermicomposting, while keeping the dialog light and entertaining. Children and adults alike should have no trouble with following his straightforward and easily understood formula for successful home vermiculture. The book does not delve into large scale, commercial methods. This one is for the folks that want to do something that is good for the planet and easily accomplished at home without spending a lot of money or adding a lot of work to your busy schedule. Highly recommend for those with an interest, as it is a short read.

From project start, to successful and happy worm bin, took less time than reading the book did. That's because the book was clear and to the point, so the actual work was quick and easy. We are now the proud parents of 1,000 happy recyclers!

I made a worm com poster from 2 Lowes buckets and a lid. Put some red wiggles in it, paper and food scraps and that's it. I had no clue what to do next. This book provide the answers. Well written extremely helpful

This book is great for starting. I have read it cover to cover at least six times and realize that I am finding more to learn each time. This book, and, access to a vermiculturist I met through the Texas A&M extension service, have made me feel very comfortable as I prepare for my first harvest. Compost production and compost tea production are better than expected.

Though a bit repetitious I found the book super informative and straight forward. Wish I had had it before I started my 3 worm bins because the info in this book would have prevented me from loosing a whole bin (2000) worms to a simple mistake. I recommend this as reading for any beginning vermiculturist.

I recently purchased and set up a Worm Composting Bin and am so glad I read this book before I got started. It is a fast, informative read with recommendations on where to purchase worms, bins as well as how to set up your own very inexpensively. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting started in vermiculture.

An elegy to a remarkable part of the world.―SUNDAY TIMESWith a skill and art quite extraordinary for a first book ... the reader is drawn into the world she describes through the warmth of her friendships and the sympathy and generosity with which she treats all aspects of her subject. From the Publisher

After two years of working in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, journalist Louisa Waugh moved to the remote village of Tsengel, in the extreme west of the country. This is the story of the year she spent there, living and working with the people who have made a home in the stark but beautiful landscape. With unflinching honesty, Waugh recounts how she slowly learned to fend for herself in a world where life is dominated by the seasons. The villagers and their culture vividly emerge as she shares her happiness, frustrations, and occasional extreme loneliness and fear. Hearing Birds Fly transports the reader from the end of a long, hard Mongolian winter, through a drought–stricken spring, into a lush summer spent in the mountains with a family of nomads. A warm, totally unsentimental account of life in a world where the act of survival is, in itself, a triumph of the human spirit.

British teacher Louisa Waugh one day decides she needs to break out of her mundane London life, and accepts an invitation to spend a year teaching the children of the outer Mongolian plains. Leaving her materialistic world of computers, Ipods, cell phones and espresso machines behind, Louisa eagerly anticipates a unique experience as she lands in Mongolia's capital city of Ulaanbaatar. She first spends a few months getting her feet wet and her body acclimatized in this city, making friends and learning the language before flying out to the steppe, the arid sparse desert-like terrain of the village of Tsengel.Arriving with just a few backpacks of personal items, Louisa is quickly & surprisingly welcomed into the family fold of some of the most generous, kind, and happy people that exist on this planet. This is the 4th book I've read about the warm and jovial Mongolian people, and it remains consistent through all that I've read about them, that they love all visitors to their land, and believe in sharing and caring for anyone that shows up knocking at their door. Minutes after her arrival she is welcomed with open arms by the town priest, and shown to her own ger, a nomadic canvas tent that might not look like much on the outside, but can be lavishly decorated with thick carpets, comfy furniture and a warm stove for heating and cooking on the inside. Unpacking her meager belongings of a few changes of clothes, cases of toilet paper, stacks of books and emergency medicine, Louisa falls in love with these smiling practical people who literally live day by day in survival mode with next to nothing to call their own, yet spend each night laughing, cooking, eating and drinking after their daily chores are done. Every act of daily life is spent working together, all efforts a joint teamwork experience. In some ways, while reading of Louisa's stay in Tsengel, the life style reminded me of the communal Amish experience.Life is harsh on the Mongolian plains, the men are hard working shepherds that prize their flocks of sheep, goats, camels and horses; their only means of survival for food, drink, and warm clothing. Louisa's stomach rebels on a diet of mutton, horsemeat, marmot and butter salted tea, and finds the weekly slaughter of animals a heart-wrenching affair that causes her much turmoil. Weather is severe, frigid winters have you up at dawn to crack the ice in your buckets to get water to drink, no running faucets here. Trench-style outhouses for bathrooms slick with ice can have you skating to the loo in the middle of the night to pee, and skinning marmot pelts and sheering sheep for cashmere and felt are back breaking jobs when it's below zero and one hasn't much food or sustenance to keep the body fat and warm. The luxury of electricity is absent, only a few community buildings are wired for it, and even then it is only turned on between 6 and 9PM in the winter hours. This is a land without luxury yet Louisa finds it appealing.Reading and teaching by candlelight and woodstove fires are the norm, as Louisa spends her year learning the gifts of love, friendship and family. She finds the joys of solitude and calmness amidst people that come to love her as their own. Birthing babies, burying the dead, battling bubonic plague, birthday celebrations & weddings rituals, weekend jaunts to the disco, and learning how to distill vodka are just some of the thrills of the Mongolian nomad life. Observing the sport of hunting with eagles while horseback riding in the mountains has Louisa enthralled with this precious country and wondering if she will ever be able to return to the hustle and bustle of London, when all she wants to do is sit on the Mongolian plain where it is so quiet you can hear the birds fly. This a sensational memoir of a courageous woman with the spirit of adventure as she learns how spoiled, greedy and closed minded most of the world is, and how she became a new woman with a whole new attitude on life after spending the best year of her life in another world on the other side of the globe.

I actually bought this book for a friend who was moving to Mongolia, and somehow kept forgetting to give it to her, so I decided to read it myself, and loved it! I really had no interest in Mongolia or travel narratives before reading this book, and it opened up a new world of reading and interests for me. It is very well written, almost poetic at times in the author's description of the places and people she introduces. It was one of those books that left me wanting more when it was finished. I found myself wondering what became of the people in the story and the author. Highly recommend.

Short of going to Mongolia and living with a nomadic family for a year, this book is the best way to learn about life in one of the world's harshest environments. Reading this gave me an appreciation for so many things that I take for granted on a daily basis--heat, electricity, and being able to eat more than mutton on any given day. The unique aspects of Mongolian life are also touched on with humor and adventure, including hunting with golden eagles and the Naadam festival wrestling tournaments.Louisa Waugh has a great writing style--lyrical, but she doesn't waste words. It's rare that a memoir is a page-turner, but this one kept me up until the wee hours of the morning.

Good 1st person account of a year spent in the outskirts of Outer Mongolia. The author took a year long assignment as an English teacher and writes about her time there, not just from a personal perspective, but also from the point-of-view of the Mongolians. It's almost part memoir, part travelogue. Great book!

Because I'm interested in the history of the nomadic Turks of Central Asia, Mongolia, and eastern Russia, I had hoped for more on nomadic life and especially the author's experience of Kazakh culture. Instead, she focuses primarily on modern Mongolia, as experienced during her year in Mongolia's westernmost village. Even so, the writing is beautiful, the observations gritty and unique, and the author's outlook wonderfully balanced (few stereotypes here). A book well worth reading!

This is a well-written account of one woman’s experience living with Kazakh and Mongol nomads in the west of Mongolia. A great perspective of the culture and lifestyle.

This memoir is a great read. The author tells her story in a way that keeps your interest and at the same time, I don't want the book to end. I bought the book because it is about Mongolia - a place I plan to visit next year; and it's written by a woman, and helps convey what it's like to experience the country as a woman; the interactions and friendships able to make; and the extent to which a woman can move about freely and safely.

This was a gift and the recipient (went to Mongolia) made a point of telling me how good this was.

I’ve read all of Charlie N. Holmberg’s books. She is a captivating writer with a wonderful imagination. While Veins of Gold is not my favorite of her books, it’s still a very good read. The bad news first: The one thing that bothered me about this story is that there wasn’t quite enough of it. I would have loved to see more depth in all of the areas—more magic and more explanation of what and why; more romance and depth to the relationship between Gentry and Winn; the family issues and character interactions were good, but I just wanted more of them. That said, however, I did enjoy this story. It’s difficult for me to geek out about all the things I loved, without giving away spoilers. A good portion of the delight I found in this book came in watching things slowly unfold—and I don’t want to ruin that for anyone. The writing is stellar. Holmberg weaves setting, dialog, and action seamlessly. I really felt I was part of this story. I loved the play on words in the title. (That shows up once we get into the story a bit.)The characters of Gentry and her siblings were well-done. I also loved the “adopted” Mormon family and how they helped Gentry and her siblings. (There is no preaching in this book.) Winn was a little confusing, and I’d like to have seen more of him to understand him better.I thought the magic system was very imaginative—the power of the earth, gold, and the magic in animals. It was believable to me that this world of magic could have once existed, and I felt sad that it doesn’t anymore.I think the thing I loved most was Gentry’s journey to understand the earth magic. I loved Winn’s seagulls and his method of travel. And I love the way Gentry was able to bring resolution to Winn’s childhood trauma. There are a couple of mild swear words. There is the violence of natural disaster, the effects of poverty, and a few punches, but it’s not bad. The romance is very clean.I recommend Veins of Gold to readers, age 14+. Also to readers who like mixed-genres, or are already Charlie N. Holmberg fans. I give it 4.5 STARS.

I loved the Paper Magician series. I loved Followed by Frost. I have enjoyed many Charlie Holmberg books, but this book was not one that I loved. Her writing is fluent and engaging in all of her books, including this one. I just did not like the story that she told. I purchased the book because I have enjoyed those other books, and because the beginning was strong. (I read the beginning with the Look Inside feature on Amazon’s website.) Unfortunately, the magic is strange, the setting jumps around, lots of things make no sense, and the resolution is not satisfying at all. If you love Charlie Holmberg, you may read this anyway. If you have never read anything by Charlie Holmberg, don’t start with this book because you might end up skipping some very entertaining stories.

Just not much here. I feel like this might have made an okay short story but got stretched into a poor novel. Sucks because I really liked the Paper Magician trilogy and now I’m worried that I just love the Paper Magician world and not the author. There just wasn’t much of a story. Wasn’t much world building. Wasn’t much character development other than a hair in the protagonist. Plot points that went nowhere. Vaguely unsatisfactory resolution to plot points.I went back and forth between two and three stars but in the end I honestly disliked it which sucks because how much I love her other work.

This book is set in an alternative version of the early days of Utah's history with many places and stories that were familiar to me. I loved the way Ms Holmberg added magic to that history. Gentry and Winn were complex but united in caring for the people around them and it was great to see the chemistry between them. Gentry's brother and sister were great supportive characters as was the magic.I loved this story and the way it made magic seem possible in our world while it was also a love story.I received a free copy for review but I enjoyed it enough to also purchase a copy for my library.

I really wanted to love this, but I just thought it was strange. I enjoyed the unfolding struggles of a homesteading family of kids abandoned by their father. I enjoyed seeing them working together to survive. I honestly think that story alone was compelling enough without the weird magic. The magic was just too strange. It didn't make sense how it worked within the context of the story. It really isn't explained how Winn or Gentry are suddenly able to wield magic, but no-one else can see what they see or do what they do. Then there are the magical flying bird and beetle houses - just nonsensical. I liked all of the characters, but I think I would have liked this better as a straight forward pioneer story without the magic. If you want to read something by this author that works better, try Followed By Frost or the Paper Magician series.

As her writing matures and finds its center, Charlie Holmberg puts a quiet, gentle energy and even more finished touch to this story of early California Gold Rush days. Her understanding of the Mormon culture and love for native American and indigenous culture gives a full rendition of early pioneer life in the Utah desert. This story is less "emotional" than some in the Young Adult genre, not the heaving bosom kind of emotion, anyway, but more a quiet seething, as a young woman is required to grow up very fast after tragedy. Her spirit is strained to the breaking point when she tries to be logical in her decisions, so it's a relief to all when she learns to follow her heart to the life she is meant to live.I enjoyed this book as much or more than the previous ones. It was the right story for the right time.

As a Vietnam visitor beginning in 1996, and a former semi-expat there, I have huge respect for Graham's work and for his former blog Noodlepie. What a great thing he's done in uncovering the culinary delights of Vietnamese food and in particular, the "street food" of the (formerly) ubiquitous carts and streetside sellers of Saigon. (As an aside, in my early trips there, I always ate from the street sellers and sat on their teeny plastic stools without hesitation, and like Graham I was normally the only Westerner at any given cart or hole-in-the-wall restaurant. But in no way did I do this with the focus and determination that Graham did with Noodlepie.)In any case, this book is a departure from those excellent exploratory missions. It's more of a story about how Graham came to develop the Noodlepie blog, and why. For me - a reader of the blog for years - it's an interesting background story and it may also be very interesting to those not familiar with Noodlepie. It's very well written, engaging, and provides a lot of insight into the cuisine of Vietnam, particularly what makes it so unique and so great.Unfortunately - and as Graham anticipates in the book - most of the streetside food sellers of downtown Saigon have been pushed off the streets and sidewalks and into storefronts or restaurants if they're to be found anywhere at all. That's a shame - although Vietnamese of my acquaintance think it's a good thing and that ridding the downtown streets of Ma and Pa food carts makes the city more advanced and "sophisticated". Still, on a very recent trip I very much missed the early morning pho carts at the back of the Hotel Rex, and I couldn't find a decent streetside bahn mi anywhere in District 1. Truly disappointing, and something that Graham discusses in this book. But all is not lost, and there's a good book or blog to be written yet again. Because outside of Saigon's District 1, and venturing further into the ex-urban and rural streets of Southern Vietnam, there remains a thriving and ubiquitous street food market that offers everything and anything formerly offered in Saigon, and much that is not. I kind of wish that Graham had ventured 20 kilometers outside of Saigon to write about those places, which as before are ubiquitous, awesomely good, and cheap. There is little question that the people of Vietnam still love excellent and tasty cuisine. I wish Graham had written a little more about those places.

I read this book in two days, despite work and at the expense of sleep. There are flaws: it sometimes feels disconnected, and there's no real narrative arc as it's the chronicle of someone chasing their white whale over a period of ten years. Still, it is the only Vietnam travel book that I have read that treated the place with real respect, a lack of pseudo-mysticism, and also managed to teach me about new dishes I haven't tried. My wife's reaction: "Oh? Yeah, I guess you really haven't tried that. It's a Hà Nội dish."I don't understand the criticisms of the author in some reviews on Goodreads, saying that he treated the Vietnamese "paternalistically" or that he fits the stereotype of the "white traveler." It does disappoint me that he didn't learn more of the language during his time there--at one point he said that he didn't learn what "mang" meant in mang đi về--but it seems a bit silly to criticize him as though he is simply a tourist with no connection to the place.

As a Vietnamese living abroad, I am always curious about others' experience and perception of Vietnamese culture. I have to say, I enjoyed reading Mr. Holliday's book very much. His observation of street food culture in Vietnam is both accurate and hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter about the cultural differences between North and South. My parents were from the North, but I was born and raised in the South, and the difference between North and South’s cooking philosophy permeated in every home cooked meal. They would diligently explain how the same dish was cooked differently in each region. Street food was an important part of any Vietnamese growing up. Reading Mr. Holliday’s book brought back a lot of happy memories of the olden days. Although, I would say that this book is strictly about street food. Most of the dishes that the author held dear to his heart are not easily replicate at home (both for the economical and taste reasons). Two important parts of Vietnamese cuisine that Mr. Holliday didn't explore are the Hue cuisine (imperial cuisine as well as street food), and Vietnamese home cooking. He readily admitted that in his book. Vietnamese home cooking is rich in varieties and taste. Hue’s cuisine is more complicated and time consuming in the preparation process, which, in my experience, makes it hard to find a decent restaurant outside of Vietnam that can recreate the taste. I am sad that Mr. Holliday left Vietnam before he could explore these parts of our cuisine. His curiosity, couples with the journalistic due diligence he did in learning about the food sources and culture transpire in this book. He delivers a fair and accurate view of a part of our culture that a native Vietnamese like me can appreciate. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Vietnam.

Whether it is your first time in Viet Nam or your next time, this is a guide that can unlock some of the mysteries of Vietnamese street food. Entertaining, informative and passionate, the author does a wonderful job of boldly going down the alleyways and peeking under the pot lids that many are too intimidated to do themselves. I have traveled to Viet Nam and have been lucky enough to have patient and informative local guides to show me the good, the bad and the quintessential dishes of this vibrant culture. This book brought back amazing tastes, warm encounters and funny faux pas I have experienced over the years. For better and for worse, I am richer for the experiences and flavors of my travels in Viet Nam. I feel the same about this book. Thank you Mr. Holliday! I am going to Viet Nam this Fall with my wife and a niece who have never been there and I am re-reading the book to take notes on specific foods and locations in Hanoi. The places might change but I share the authors wish that the menu will be eternal. Chuc suc khoe!
