The queen of fog tale have spoken.I have now read some of the reviews giving this book 5 stars. Inconceivable for me. I'm sure the author have had some great experiences trough her journey, but have no ability to guide others by her book. There are no understanding of metaphysics reflected in the book. Terms are used without any prior definitions or explanations. It is expected that the myths of Lemuria and Atlantis should be accepted and known. There are references to other dimensions. Some other books are referred, but only by title, no real references.This has nothing to do in a book.

A little too out there for me. Prefer Eros Ascending over this even though it's twice as thick as this book as this. The writing style and the material are better.

Only recently -- through another Amazon reviewer, by the way -- did I learn about Etgar Keret. The book of his I chose to sample, essentially at random, was THE GIRL ON THE FRIDGE. It turns out, according to the book's back cover, to be a collection of "the best of Keret's" earliest books of short stories. If indeed these are the best of Keret, it is fortuitous that I made THE GIRL ON THE FRIDGE my introduction to him -- because while some of the pieces are very good, just as many are only so-so, and a few are trash.There is no denying, however, that Keret is an original voice. And that he has a very fertile imagination. There are forty-six stories in this volume -- the shortest containing only eleven lines, the longest seven pages, most only two or three pages. They all are somewhat zany, even manic. Some are violent; some are playful. Some are touching; a few are sick. In most of them, you are immediately thrown into the story with little if any orientation, and then, just as you are getting your bearings, the story veers in a wholly unexpected direction, or does an abrupt about-face, or shifts to a different reality altogether.For me, the three best pieces are "Asthma Attack", about how asthmatics must dispense their words very judiciously; "Freeze", a fantasy in which people (mostly, attractive young women) do whatever the narrator tells them to do; and "Terminal", which begins with the sentence "Hans and I had nothing in common except brain cancer."The stories are set in Israel. As a whole, the book seems to be critical of Israel's treatment of Arabs, but I can't be sure because the prevailing tone is so flippant. It may be that Keret is simply nihilistic in his basic approach to all aspects of contemporary life (at least life in Israel). Anyhow, by book's end, I felt that there was an emptiness or hollowness to Keret, and, despite his brilliance and originality, I have no desire to read more of him.

Short stories and sometimes very very short stories - maybe those (the really short ones) could be called prose poems, I don't know - but all of them are cryptic, unresolved, dark, surreal, weird, violent, and painful in varying combinations and by degrees. Most would be fine scripts for graphic novels. I have read work by Keret that I like (the short story A. in WIRED's recent sci-fi issue [which is why I bought Girl on the Fridge]), but did not find much to like here. Challenging, thought provoking, nightmare provoking, disgust provoking, with a bit of silliness, but not likable. I am guessing that Keret does not require his readers or wait for his readers to like his work.Buy a used copy of this one - no sense paying full price.

After reading Keret's "Suddenly a Knock at the Door," and "The Nimrod Flipout" this was a BIG disappointment. The dark stories often have a surprising twist, but there is something MISSING here. Remember this was written when Keret was quite young.

The voice of the next generation? Please. If so the next generation is in more trouble than anyone in the previous generations has noticed yet. Too many of these short-shorts only read like Keret ran out of energy or imagination.The few that work, like the very funny The Journey, the funnier Loquat, and, if possible the even better The Night The Buses Died, depend on some knowledge of Israeli culture. That figures. He's not writing for New York, even if one of the Big Six has anointed him a member of traditionally-published royalty. Probably for the violent stories, their favorite kind.They also set the exorbitant price for the ebook, trying to shore up their cratering paper business model. And their gatekeeper status. Good luck with that.There are a few other good, even inspired, stories here. Nothing, for instance, Happy Birthday to You, On the Nutritional Value of Dreams, Cheerful Colors, Boomerang, So Good and Knockoff Venus. Let's see, that's ten out of 46 stories, or 22 percent. Not enough to satisfy, but enough to try another, hopefully better, collection of Keret's work.

A great friend of mine loaned me this book saying is changed her. It had an amazing effect on me too. The book is written in very short stories, no more than a page or three at most. Each story is complete, explores an idea, an event, often with an unexpected component, not really a twist, just unexpected. The book is just the essence of stories. It's like a great red wine reduction ... flavorful, deep in color, hints of what could be a much bigger wine, but concentrated to accent your current mood.I think the first two stories: asthma and the marriage story stuck with me the most. The line in the first story goes something like this:"When an asmatic says "I love you," and when an asthmatic says "I love you madly," there's a difference. The difference of a word. A word's a lot. It could be stop, or inhaler. It could even be ambulance."

This is my first introduction to Keret and I will probably go back for more. His better pieces in the book are amazingly solid and linger in your system for a few days after reading.For American audiences, a few stories will probably go over your head as he's an Israeli author. The Night the Buses Dies comes to mind.Keret is definitely a writer aiming to induce emotion and thought more than tell a fulfilling story. That works amazingly in his favor for the most part, but it also makes his lesser stories seem almost pointless. This particular collection seemed to have more duds than gems, but what I liked, I really liked, so I'm willing to give it 4/5 stars.

Really spectacular. If you ever wished you could read stories that just got to the good part, these are them... Keret cuts out the backstories and the descriptions and the internal monologues and gets right to the heart of conflict. Spectacular.

Keret in top form, does not disappoint.

An interesting guidebook to the Cairo Egyptian Museum. Zahi Hawass makes his choice of his favourite pieces from the museum. He starts with the replica of the Rosetta Stone and that the British Museum will not return it due to the security arrangements at Cairo Museum. Enough said. I could never understand why they have such a poor copy. The replica copy on the ground floor, which you are encouraged to touch, at the British Museum is much better. The photographs are excellent and Zahi's comments show his love of Ancient Egypt. For a more indepth guide "A walk through the Alleys of Ancient Egypt" by Abeer el-Shahawy is to be recommended

I felt lost. I'm sure the museum is immense and contains a tremendous amount of artifacts. But I had a difficullt time trying to relate one to another. I'm sure that is difficult even when you are there, considering the tremendous number of centuries of history involved.

I was disappointed with the lack of mummy pictures. The few that were in here were great. They were very detailed and almost startling when you turned the page. This book has pictures of statues and some jewelry in the museum and a caption on each; they were ok, but not as interesting to me as the mummy pictures. I much preferred "The Life of Ancient Egyptians"; it didn't have as many pictures, but was very informative about every day life of Egyptians.

Dr. Hawass is a fascinating and insightful author.

This actually succeeds in making the reader appreciate each piece better than in the Museum itself. Anyone who has visited this crowded, messy and dusty place realizes however that such is not a major achievement.The photographs are all in full colour, set on a black background and quite beautiful. There is, however, a definite lack of coordination with the captions. Often enough, the photo will only show a close-up of a piece but the text will describe the whole. It is awkward for instance to read about a statue's feet when only the head is shown!The lay-out is strangely traditional, with each page being devoted either to text or photos. Though numerical references are provided, this is quite confusing as a caption may refer to a photo as much as 4 pages back or ahead.Those who have visited the Cairo Museum may find this book worthwhile as a souvenir. However, those unfamiliar with Egyptian history and art should look elsewhere for a substantial introduction to the field.

This book is a lot of fun. Good action told through good writing. Every book I've read by William Dickstein has been enjoyable.

With each installment thus far Dickstein has added a new layer of depth to the Ch05En universe. MegaTech has not only added more layers than could be boasted by any item on a Taco Bell menu but has also begun to wrap all the pieces into a whole, much like many of the items on a Taco Bell menu. If their are two things I know I want they are for you to read this and for you to bring me something from Taco Bell.

*Disclaimer: I received my copy was for review purposes*The best way I can describe this in a few words: A darker, adult version of "The Incredibles." I mean that in the best way too. Imagine a world where a new genome has been discovered that everyone has, but not everyone has unlocked. Inside each of us we have this strand of DNA that holds the potential for greatness. Everyone's gene is different and thus contains a different abilities or power. Some people get super strength, others super intellect, and for some it may be something smaller, such as the ability to become a rock star. The only catch is that not everyone gets to utilize their gene in their lifetime. It's possible that the gene will remain dormant forever, and you'll live as a normal person in a world with superheroes. As you read through "Ch05en: MegaTech" you'll follow the story of Megan, the activating of her genome and both the positive effects on her life as well as the dark secrets she keeps.This short story does a great job of setting up an atmosphere that doesn't seem too far off, but just fantasy enough to keep you reading. I can't stress enough how much I like the idea of this untapped gene and the superpowers that follow. If you're a fan of super powers, comics, or nerdy stuff I think you'll enjoy this. The reason I give 4/5 stars is that the book sometimes seems to tread the line of wanting to be a full fledged novel, versus a short story. Sometimes the content drags a tiny bit to give you the full detail of scenarios, and other times it jumps frames super fast to keep the action going. Although this method sometimes work really well, it occasionally left me in moments thinking "hurry up, I want to know what happens next!"

I am not a comic book guy and I rarely read any type of fiction...but I seriously enjoyed everything I have read in the Ch05en series. I really do hate the way all of them end...because they leave you wanting more. I really do look forward to the next installments in the Ch05en series.

The chapter of metastability, Cross domain clocking etc are from any manual which one can access from solvenet(synopsys database).these guys write up these books for exorbitant prices.... i dont think these books merit the price... no value addition

My 4 year old son (almost 5) is a HUGE vehicle fanatic; especially of race cars. His favorite movies are Cars and Cars 2. We've had this book for almost a month now, and already we've read it to him no less than a couple dozen times! He absolutely LOVES this book!The story is about a race that takes place at the Hot Wheels Test Facility to determine the world's best driver. There are four drivers, green, blue, red, and yellow; each with a different approach to the race. For instance, the green driver is super fast and thinks speed will win him the race, while the blue driver thinks his high tech gear will help him win. The race is described in exciting step by step detail, and some beautiful illustrations are included. The story is very entertaining, and is written using simple easy to read words. This Scholastic Reader Level 1 is geared towards beginning readers. It is a great story for racing car lovers, and a wonderful reading tool for early readers.

cute story but hard words for beginning readers to sound out hopefully some publishers will come up with better standards for level 1 and 2 readers.
