About the Author
JOSH BURNETTE is a husband, dad, business owner, and author who currently resides in Little Rock, Arkansas. Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, he started working for Chick-fil-A as a team member when he was barely old enough to see over the counter. He received his bachelor’s degree in business management from James Madison University in 2009 (Go Dukes!). Throughout college, he served as a Young Life leader for a local high school, and his passion for mentoring young people began. After graduating, he went to work fulltime for a Young Life camp in Buena Vista, Colorado. He decided to come back to Chick-fil-A to combine his loves for business and working with young people. He served as the owner/operator of a mall restaurant for two years and currently leads a free-standing restaurant employing over one hundred people in Little Rock. Josh is a certified speaker with SCORRE workshops and recently enjoyed the opportunity to be the keynote speaker for Verizon Wireless. In his free time, he enjoys reading, traveling, volunteering on several boards in the community, and snowboarding. Josh is married and has two children. PETE HARDESTY currently serves as the Young Life college divisional coordinator in the Eastern Division. He moved to the Washington, D.C. area from the friendly city of Harrisonburg, Virginia. Pete grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the University of Virginia where he was pre-med with the emphasis on “pre.” He then joined the staff of Young Life in Virginia Beach, where he served for seven years before moving to Harrisonburg in 2004. After being the area director for Young Life in Harrisonburg for eight years, Pete transitioned to start Young Life College at James Madison University in 2012. Pete loves being around college students even though they make him feel old. He crammed his three years of grad school into seventeen and finally received his Master of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary in 2014. A passion for the Middle East has inspired Pete to lead Holy Land trips for the last ten years, with a focus on serving Palestinian kids in the West Bank. He is a frequent international keynote speaker with experience in such places as Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and places all over the US, speaking to groups as big as four thousand. He is a speaker coach with SCORRE workshops and loves helping people become excellent communicators. Pete has been working with young people for twenty-five years. They are still his favorite. He loves people and creating environments where they can thrive and achieve their potential. His two nieces are the apple of his eye.

I am a teenager who bought and read this book (using my mom's account). I think if you know what you are getting, it's probably fine. But I, personally, found the writer condescending (don't dye your hair purple and do cover yourself up if you are going to an interview, hashtag everything--not all teens are losers who don't know how to present themselves). One of the reviews I used before buying this said it was good for people in their 20s and 30s and I think if you don't know how to present yourself for a job interview by then, your issues go beyond not knowing how to "adult." Besides, if you are going for a creative job somewhere, purple hair might be appropriate.I was looking for more specific and advanced advice, I guess, and found that most of what was here was really common sense. Yes, I know most folks will follow that with "common sense isn't common" but if you DO have common sense, you don't need this book.There ARE some good tips on money management, so it wasn't a total loss.Another surprise, though, came on page 140, there began a discussion on Jesus Christ, which, given the connection to Chick-fil-A I guess I should have expected, but I didn't. I am not against Christian believers having their say, I just wasn't expecting to be told here that "the recipe for success in life is following Jesus Christ." I thought I was buying something different.So, I guess I wasn't the right audience for this book. If you are, go for it.
…some of these things before I left for college. I would have had less financial trouble in front of me and more good decisions behind me. Know anyone that you wish could skip common life mistakes? I’ve already made a mental list of three college-aged young people that are going to be gifted with this book; my daughter is one of them. Edited to add: scratch that. I just got these books and realized that three is not enough; I keep thinking of more young adults who would benefit from them!Adulting 101 is like every piece of helpful advice someone could get from wise parents, uncles and aunts, grandparents, and financial advisors compacted into one book. It has reams of practical, useful advice on a wide array of subjects from how to dress for a job interview and how to get the best deal for a car to deciding between renting an apartment or buying a house. There’s advice on relating to others, being a good leader, investing, and so much more that would be boring for me to actually list it all out. (Check out the table of contents.) There’s not a lot of fluff. Okay, there’s not ANY fluff.I think it’d be awesome if this book was required reading for high school juniors or seniors. There are some things where everyone is better off if we don’t have to learn it the hard way.My only complaints about this book are that 1) the info is so dense, the lists could have been broken up more into sections with easy-to-find headings or indexed, and 2) the appendices have so much good information, they should have been included as part of the book itself, since so many people ignore appendices. I’d hate for anyone to miss the advice in the appendices that is not replicated in the body of the book itself.Heads-up, this is a Christian book, although that only crops up in a couple of sections, and the advice in Adulting 101 is valid no matter one’s creed or religion. No advice is invalidated by that context. I just mention that for the sake of those who find it unacceptable to come into contact with anything remotely touching upon Christianity.I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) from the publisher through NetGalley. My opinions are my own.
I am a Senior...not in college, not in high school; but in life. At 71 years of age, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is filled with practical and wise information, understanding of young folks and sound advice for 'adulting'. (Some great tips, too, for those of us who are ready for Adulting 707!)Reading this book can enable you to better communicate with younger generations. Giving this book to younger generations will provide an enriching and priceless guide for them.
This book is a must read for people high school age and above and is full of practical advice for young adults entering the “real†world. As a 60 -year- old who has worked in the financial world for over 25 years, I believe that the principles concerning money management alone are worth the price of the book. As a mother of two thirty-somethings, I realize that there is much practical advice in this book that I never thought to pass on to my own children. I found the chapter concerning setting goals invaluable for myself, and plan on putting the concepts into practice in my own life. This is not a “religious†book, but the questions and facts presented concerning Jesus are vital to everyone at any age.
This book takes many of the things that have the power to destroy a young man or woman, and shows you how to use them to your advantage instead. Definitely a book worth having on your shelf just so you can take it off your shelf and give it to a friend you care about.
As someone who, at least purports to provide professional financial advice, I am so thrilled with the publication of this book. The breadth of coverage is very solid and the depth of insight is appropriate to each topic addressed. The chapters read quickly and hold your attention. This will be an easy book to buy for my own children and I also intend it as a gift for others. Thank you to the authors for answering the call...this is a much-needed book!
